us on the beach
taking in the sun... so this past weekend was spent at the black sea, right outside of varna. after quite a bit of drama with the directors not wanting us to go, aka they don't trust us because we're american (despite the fact that our friends from denmark, ukraine, and romania were going as well) we departed by bus. once in varna we searched for this restaurant, kushtata, and qute a bit of searching finally were able to find it. the food was quite good, though having to wait like 45 minutes for manuela's tripe (of all things) to come was a bit ridiculous.
our hotel, located in st. constantine and helena, a resort-esque place just outside varna was....inne...we came down this street with all these nice places feeling quite good about where we would be staying, but then we saw the little shithole, itself, and lost all morale. i had a good time speaking in polish, bulgarian, and english with the owners, who actually walked us over to the sister hotel where we'd be staying. there were 9 of us, and i stayed in the room with thatcher and colin.
walking down the block we found ourselves right on the black sea, and we spent a couple of hours just strolling up and down soaking it all in. it was pretty freakin' gorgeous. i don't really recall where we ate dinner, though i do recall getting pretty smashed at a cool little cafe in golden sands, another resort-place outside of varna. being drunk wasn't enough for me to ignore the fact that the place was pretty much a whore island, considering the main drag was literally lined with prostitutes and drunken brits and germans on stag weekends and whatnot. it was rather depressing to see how the local culture was literally choked to death and replaced by this sickly-tourist oriented culture. we went clubbing and whatnot, eventually coming home around 4 after getting ripped off by the extreme-asshole cab drivers.
the next morning was our day at the beach, so we headed down a few blocks from our "hotel" and started to soak up the sun after a good breakfast of ham and eggs. it had been awhile.... the water was really warm, the weather was gorgeous, and the waves were awesome, so we had quite the afternoon just chilling on the beach.
after dinner we had a bit of a disagreement and henceforth had a guys night out with me, colin, thatcher, steve, and casper. we ended up having a pretty amazing dinner and just chilled at the restaurant for a couple of hours. i had some great battered fish (after all, we were on the seacoast) as well as some good wine, bread, and whatnot. once again i can't upload any pictures, which sucks. i'm gonna have to wait til warsaw in another couple weeks...
the evening was spent just hanging around constantine and helena after dusting our hotel rooms with ash and soaking the sheets in alcohol. not really, but yea, it was fun. steve peed out the window, which ended up being an issue after the held his passport the next morning until the director came to lecture him in bulgarian (which he didn't understand), but whatever.
yesterday we headed into varna and explored the roman baths ruins which were pretty sweet. after some food and more walking around, we got on a bus to gorna, since the next bus to turnovo wasn't until midnight. there was other drama during the day with our romanian friend who decided to be a bit dramatic whore, but whatever, we just left her at the station. oops!
we got food, and headed back to turnovo...good times...

Inne....
So you say that the Black Sea coast was quite beautiful. Would you say it was as beautiful as, say, the Baltic Sea coast??
