My exit from Greece took longer than expected. After a 4am rise to make my plane out of Crete, my flight was cancelled due to bad weather. A bit of fog that cleared in an hour. And it didn't seem to matter to my airline that all the other airlines were still taking off. Chaos followed as everyone rushed to the ticketing desk to try and get the next flight out of there. Human nature at it's worst. My only option was to fly out the next morning. So I headed back into Hania and returned the next morning. The weather was fine and my plane took off to Athens where I had a five hour stop over before my flight to Sofia, Bulgaria. Shortly after my arrival my body decided to give me the ... read more

i just spent 3 hours in a bulgarian police station - which is kinda funny because it happened 10 hours after i left my aussie chaperones/accent mockers... (yeah yeah lets hear it, at least i have a sense of direction) i arrived at 6.30am on a sleeper train, first things first went to change some money at the currency exchange office in the train station... and got ripped off by about a third, despite the big words printed on the office 'no commission', and the fact that it was in a train station, which you'd think would be the official place. well that will be the last time i change money without knowing how much roughly i should get... luckily i only lost out on about NZ$80. but i told the lady who runs the ... read more

Thursday March 8. Last night I accessed my e-mails. I had e-mails from Alison, Peter and Tony. I replied and Peter replied again almost immediately. It is still amazing for me this internet. As so usual it is difficult to get out of these cities on a bike with the roads built for cars and of motorway standard. At the start of the E80 I asked a police officer for route 8 which runs next to the motorway but he insisted that it was better to use the hard shoulder of the motorway so with some trepidation I did. Not surprisingly I made good progress but at Novi Sad I decided to go on to route 8 - a mistake. For 20 kms I tried to ride on this potholed road which made riding all but ... read more

Hi all, Well it's time for my long overdue blog entry from our Christmas break. Arriving in Bulgaria it didn't take us long before we met some of the locals. Taxi, you want taxi, I have taxi, I take you. This wasn't all that new to most of us, but we weren't too sure of where we should head to and it wasn't all that easy to organise a group of 17 to communicate with about six drivers to take us to our hotel. Luckily a nice local lady pointed us in the right directon and spoke to the drivers for us (with our fingers crossed that we were not being ripped off!!!) and we were on our way. The race was one. Taxi v's taxi. Safe and sound at the Park Hotel Vitosha we unpacked ... read more

The train ride from Bucharest to Sofia was a blast. The 3 frenchies who shared the compartment with me had alcohol and a pack of card! They showed me a new card game which was a blast and the night passed really fast. We were woken up at around 5:30AM and got off the train in one of the most confusing and beaten down train station I've seen in a long time. It seems that the train station's designer thought they were building a station for Moscow and forgot that Sofia is not like 15 millions people. It's way too big and not maintained, plus everything is written in cyrillic and the women we tried to ask direction were about as nice as a unionized french employee. I hate to be pessimistic about a whole people ... read more

well kids, i'm back in sofia after my adventures in macedonia. seeing as my bus got in before 6am this morning, i've been quite bored or the past couple of hours. after some coffee and pretending to understand the bulgarian newspaper at the bus station, i dropped off my bags and headed out for a morning stroll through the city. its quite peaceful in the morning. we'll see what i end up doing for the rest of the day before my flight to warsaw... so yesterday morning i think i finally felt like part of the family, which was unfortunate considering it was the day i had to leave. after waking up and buying my bus ticket with Goce (neighbor), i joined the bunch on the balcony for a traditional balkan breakfast of cigarettes and turkish ... read more

So the train was pretty sweet, we had our own little room and everything. The border guards rudely awakened us in the night to sign out of Turkey and into Bulgaria but otherwise it was pretty mellow and we slept alright. The countryside as we drove through was prety cool - lots of wildflowers and burnt out old communist bloc style bunkers and buildings, nuts. We arrived in Sofia around 1pm and unloaded a bunch of our passengers. We were just chilling in the carriage waiting to zoom off again when our friend from the next room, Samir from Serbia, poked his head round the corner and asked if we wanted to cry now or later. Turns out the engine forgot us. Our little carriage, with 6 passengers, was stuck in Sofia. And the next engine ... read more
