After leaving Bansko my family and I headed to the Black Sea coast. The interesting thing about Bulgaria (in a very summary description form) is that you can experience the pleasure of hiking tall beautiful mountains and 5-6 hours drive later you could be at one of the many seaside resorts. Our trip took us to the resort town of Nessebar located in the central part of the Bulgarian Black Sea coast (please see the map in the previous post) We had booked an all inclusive stay at the Nessebar IFA hotel (I believe this was a German hotel chain). The all inclusive meant meals and hotel rooms for all of us were included. The hotel was located South of the old town of Nessebar in the newer section of town. Nevertheless it was not far ... read more

Weekends or weekdays..... life never stops in BG. The restaurants and bars are full, the food is really great. All the things I loved to eat and grew up on I've had the opportunity to taste again, various salads with grated fetta on top, a multitude of choices for the meatlover: grilled delicacies and spit roasts, a selection of exotic seafood from the Black Sea and much more. A standard 'small' drink is 50ml here, but the locals always order the 'standard' large of 100ml, served with a glass full of ice and a bottled mixer of their choice. Yes, they certainly can hold their drink around here. In some clubs it's possible to order 'hard' alcohol by the bottle, and the account is charged to the table. Many of the clubs which my cousin took ... read more

Actually, any slower than the pace I am currently going and I would come to an absolute standstill. Oh, that's right, I have been standing still... I arrived in Burgas last Friday, a little worse for wear, with the cold not getting better and a cough that seemed to be threatening to develop into something nastier. I may be over dramatising here but it was getting kind of annoying coughing all the time and the fever was kind of irritating as well so it was with absolute delight that I met up with Huw, a guy a friend from home had put me in touch with, and be offered a place to sleep and rest. What bliss, what joy to speak English, not to have to entertain (or try to be entertaining) and just be. Huw ... read more

Well, I am slowly making my way down the Black Sea coast being somewhat made to slow down by a blasted cold I know I picked up in Veliko Turnavo (everyone in the hostel there seemed to be coughing and spluttering and I obviously have not incorporated enough garlic into my diet so am doing likewise now). I cheated (again!) and caught the bus to Varna which I am very glad about. The towns that the bus drove through looked absolutely miserable and the landscape, well, nothing I haven't seen before. Not only that, I saw a pack of dogs giving chase to a horse and cart. I was very grateful to have been observing this from the comfort of my air-conditioned bus. On the dog front though, they have been relatively good. Hope this continues. ... read more

Around Burgas are some of the most important wetlands in the world. Migrating species of many birds, travelling to Africa from Northern Europe (and Russia) follow the strip of land down to Turkey and then on through the Middle East and into Africa. Collectively known as the Burgas Lakes, they're actually seperate areas within 10 or so kilometers of the city. Sara and I visited the PODA Protected Area, which is the easiest for the backpacker to visit (has a visitor centre) and close to the city. The Bulgarian Society for the Protection of Birds manages the area and welcomes visitors. We only had a few hours at the centre but with the aid of binoculars lent to us from the visitors centre we saw, cormorants, herons, waders, swans, terns, ducks, coots and many types of ... read more

Sounds exotic, Nesebar, roll the sounds around and it could be in Moroco, or just round the corner from Timbuktu. In fact Nesebar is located on an island with a narrow causeway linking it to the mainland, and the wonderfully named 'Sunny Beach'. We knew that this world heritage site would be popular with day trippers so deliberatly aimed to make our day trip a later one. Buses run every half hour from 7am till 9pm both ways from Burgas, so not a problem there. First impression: Tourist crazy - so man, throngs, herds, hordes, stampedes, plagues, what is the collective noun for tourist? I guess that I'm just part of this collective group but feel that there are a few major differences between the traveller and the holiday maker. Holiday maker: has very limited time, ... read more

We choose to stay in Burgas for a few days, it would allow us to make day trips to Nesebar and the Poda Conservation center at the Burgas Lakes. When we arrived at the bus station back from reset and recuperation in Ahtopol we decided that we would again try a private room. This time we went to a private agency. The agency had a room in not a bad location for 26 Leva a night (13 Euro). Burgas - not a bad city, though to be honest we didn't spend much time there. There is a little beach, a few churches, a large port and some Lakes. We didn't visit the museums, or churches, but did wander around the town a few times, mainly to get money from the ATMs and get to other places. ... read more

South of Burgas on the Black Sea Coast at the last bus stop is the village of Ahtopol, population 1,300. Sounded nice in the guide books and was recommended by a Bulgarian bookmaker in Dupnitsa. The bus stopped at around 6.30pm, after a journey past Sozopol and beach after beach. We unloaded our ample backpacks and were imediatly approached by a small boy, we couldn't understand what he was offering but his grandma was better with the sign language, off to look at a private rom. Clean, close to the center, hot water, and only 20 lv (10 Euro) it seemed good to me. Sara wanted to see Hotel Neptune, but too late we were booked in. Next stop beach, unload the swimming gear, unstrap the beach mats we had unwisely carried from Budapest, available for ... read more
