We all woke up with great desires to indulge in Belgium delicacies - waffles, frites and chocolate!! hit me baby! So we started at the b&b with more beautifully fresh croissants, met up with the others and went on a search for good chocolate and the starting point of the river cruise! We found both right next to each other as naturally there is a chocolate shop literally every 10 steps sometimes less! This is my kind of place! So we stocked up on chocs and boarded the very crammed wee boat. It was another nice day so it was such a nice cruise. We had pretty much seen most stuff before but it was nice and relaxing and we learnt a few more things that Chris didnt include in our tour yesterday! :) We even ... read more

So, we arrived in Bruges last night in the POURING and I mean POURING rain!! What a welcome! the flight from edinburgh was only an hour and a bit but we then had to get a bus into the city which was an hour, and then a train from the city of brussels to Bruges which was just over another hour! So even though it was a short flight it took a fair while to get into Bruges! Thankfully I have my brand spanking new amaizng kindle that just kept me engrossed the whole time - so much so it was annoying when we had to get off our current mode of transport and change cos I had to put the kindle down! What a geek! :P Anywho, we arrived into Bruges in the wet darkness ... read more

I don't typically like writing "beer diaries." The last thing people want to read about is how drunk you were in a foreign country. But, it is Belgium, and what is this country well-known for? Beer, indeed! So, i'm going to talk at least a little about beer. Don't worry though, i'll keep it short and refined. I found myself in a Belgium bar the first evening here in Bruges, and i can't think of a better place to be drinking beer. Period. Melted wax and wood panels surround the bar. The giant clock ticking backwards makes you feel like there isn't a care in the world. People are speaking English, French, Flemish, German, and Spanish. It's an eclectic melting pot of people with a good buzz. Pink elephants (Delirium Beer's mascot) taunt you all over ... read more

After one more night in England we drove on to a ferry in Dover, in extremely foggy conditions, crossing the Channel to Dunkirk. We then had 2 nights in a caravan at a campground near Bruges in Belgium. Bruges (or Brugge) is probably the most tourist orientated place we have ever been! At any one time on a small stretch of the narrow river you can see up to 4 tourist boats and rarely none, and there are horse drawn carriages everywhere. Emma was fascinated with the "nappies" the horses wear to keep the roads clean!... read more

Ten weeks, 13,784 kilometers and 17 Countries later we returned the van on Friday. We were both very upset to be saying goodbye, as it has been an amazing adventure and probably the only time we will be free to travel for that long without any plans. The van definitely had its fair share of problems (we had to get a few jump and push starts over the last couple of weeks) but that didn't manage to deter away from the great time we had in Europe. Europe is definitely set up for camping, and it was such an easy way to get around. Surprisingly the Dutch were always the most common nationality to see at a campsite- generally making up around 60% of the population. In our last week in the van we headed to ... read more

It has been a little while since the last update - primarily due to the hectic pace. We walked pretty much all across Paris over seven days and are now in Ypres, Belgium for a visit to the WW1 battlefields tomorrow. Some of the highlights in Paris included fireworks on Bastille Day at the Eiffel Tower starting at 11pm, visit to the cemetry Pere Lachaisse where many famous people are buried including Chopin, Oscar Wilde and Edith Piaf; and to the Pantheon where the greats of France are interred including Victo Hugo, Voltaire, Curies, and Alexander Dumas. The tour to Versailles was good although it was incredibly crowded and felt like we were pushed through a sausage machine. However we did feel it was more interesting that in 1988 mainly due to the fact that we ... read more

Today was the longest single ride of 100 Kms. We departed from the Hotel in Ieper and headed west into Flanders. 10 Kms into the ride we climbed the famous Kemmelberg which was the last of the cobbled hills. This proved less daunting than the previous climbs and Chris made it to the top! After a long ride we reached the Australian War Memorial and the cemetery of the lost soldiers in Frommel which bought us down to earth (quite humbling). after a quick stop for lunch we rode on to Lillers and then rode on to Therouanne to watch the feed zone of the race. Huge crowds greeted us and took great amusement at the noise the Aussies were creating. We then headedblack to the hotel by bus. After watching the finish of the race ... read more

Well, we finally made it to Brussels after a 8 1/2 hr coach ride - which included a ferry ride from Dover, England to Belgium. Now, I usually don't mind buses, but this bus...well, it stunk. And after several hours of restless "sleep" and stinky fumes, we were glad to be able to get out on the ferry (aka cruise ship) for about 2 hrs! We have ferries in Washington. In Europe, ferries are cruise ships. They have 6 or 7 levels for cars, buses, trucks, etc, a food court and lounge/sleep area, and a floor dedicated to a casino. Whattttt?! Why don't ferries back home have sleeping areas? Well, once we got into Brussels, we definitely had a bit of a shock trying to find where it was we needed to go. Also, at that ... read more

12/6/2012 So on a day with no exams, what are 35 bored exchange students going to find to do ? Today, it was kayaking. Expertly thought up by Morgan, around 35 of us exchangers headed down to Dinant, where the kayaking charters were. We started in great weather, and in general, despite being at the back of the group and chilling down the river with my mates at the back, it was awesome. Ben played this little flute thing, that was kinda in aqueous transmission territory which really added to the ambience. We stopped for lunch and a few drinks at a little beach we found some while down the river. At the end of the day, we got some coffee at the café just en face de la finish of the trip. After a cold ... read more
