Bruges day 2 Flanders fields tour was much more intense than I had expected. Although I knew a little about world war one, hearing the stories told to us in a personal perspective with the grounds lying before me was very heart wrenching and sobering. The first stop off the bus was the German war memorial. The head stones are left unmarked and it is called the student graveyard as Germany had sent so many pupils, apprentices and young untrained volunteers that they were obliterated and basically used as canon fodder. There is over 45,000 German soildiers buried there and their names are written inside on the walls of the memorial. The Belgian government are still adding bodies as they are found. The first christmas during the first initial year of the war, the soldiers had ... read more

The peace of the Belgium countryside was shattered by the out of tune choruses of Waterloo by Abba. We sped towards the battlefield of Waterloo and the stuff of history came to mind. Grammar school history started with pre-history, the Stone Age, Iron Age and Bronze Age moving through to the Saxons, the Norman Conquest to the reign of Henry VIII and his break with Rome. We studied the English Civil War,the Commonwealth and finally moved on in our 3rd year to GCSE History which started with the Hanoverian George III in 1760 and ending with the outbreak of World War One. History for us covered the causes of battles, the politics of the day, the dates, the people and the places but did not concentrate on the on the sites themselves. Fields around the battlefield ... read more

Well I managed my first ever drive on the wrong side of the road and after quite a long time - about 3 hours we reached Ypres. It took a lot of concentration and help from Sam who is a good navigator and reminded me where to look... at 8pm every evening there is a Last Post ceremony and while we got here about 8pm we checked into the hotel and just missed it. The gate is impressive and sad with all the names of the missing soldiers with no graves - 35000 in total. Need to go back into the car now and head gor Cologne so hope to update more later.... read more

When we planned this trip we wanted to include a visit to Trois Arbres Cemetery near the France/Belgium border where an uncle who was killed in World War One is buried. Today we made this visit, taking time first to go into the nearby village of Steenwerck and look about, as well as visit the Information Centre where we were given good advice on how to find this particular cemetery. We found the cemetery easily and there in a row of closely spaced white headstones was the familiar name, with the New Zealand fern emblem. It seemed a good thing that there are three New Zealanders together in this particular spot and of course many others throughout the cemetery. In this quiet rural setting it was hard to imagine the devastation, confusion and noise of battle. ... read more

Will ye go to Flanders? Ieper (Ypres in French; they speak Flemish here) is a beautiful little town half an hour north of the French border at Tourcoing. Given that it was completely flattened during World War &, they did an excellent job of reconstructing it. People coming back after the war had to locate where there house had been from aerial photos and start again. The town square, a.k.a. the Great Market, is like something from the set of a movie set in 1910, with long passages of sweeping arch-ways and big, square church towers. In fact, a lot in Belgium reminds you of that era; the train ticket inspectors look like something out of a Poirot episode, with little round Genderme style hats, drab grey uniforms and orange sashes. The border area in Northern ... read more

Our accommodation has been very good, with a good breakfast (meaning a good variety of cereals, breads, croissants, egg, fruit, tea/coffee and juices). Drove to Ypres (Ieper depending on the language). Hoped to see a WW1 museum but it was closed due to renovations. Walked around. Very nice and a lot cheaper than Bruges. Had a nice lunch (and an Irish coffee) and then drove to the Hill 60 site which quite famous WW1 location. A lot of falling snow today and the kids had a lot of fun throwing snow balls and rolling up big ones. A lot of sliding as well. Not much else to report. Tomorrow (5th) is Eileen's birthday and we catch a ferry from Calais to Dover. Ah - England at last. Hope they speak English - it will be a ... read more

We’re in Belgium now. We arrived in Ieper (Ypres), in the rain, last Friday and were thrilled to find our hotel room had the most incredible view (see pic 1) to the Cloth Hall which was recreated after being destroyed in the war, and was also very close to Menin Gate. The hotel also had a great restaurant and we made the most of it that night... resulting in minor hangovers on Saturday. We set off in the car and visited a number of locations where A’s grandfather had been - Passchendale, Broodseinde Ridge and Dikkebuse. We also visited Hill 60. That evening we again went to Menin Gate for the daily and very moving performance of the Last Post (see pic 2). ... read more

Hi again Quite a few years ago I started looking at my family history and on my mums mums side (my Grandma) (Stark) I had some info from the 1881 census that they lived just off Clarence street down Naylors Row in Hull and that it was a large family with Martin Stark (my great great grandfather) as the head of the house. I didn't get much further until I met a relation of mine (Chris Thor) last year at my Grandmas funeral and he told me loads about the Starks including a relation Lewis H Stark (my great granddads brother, so my great uncle) who was killed in WWI. Lewis actually lied to join up in 1914 at the age of 14 as all 3 of his older brothers where in the army. He was ... read more

Tuesday 23.2.2010 day 133 Belgian - Ypres (Ieper) We went to Ypres and the Australian 5th battalion memorial and cemetery in the fields of Flanders. It was very sad to see so many from Australian, NZ and Canadians die so far from home in a war that was not really even there’s. We found a grave of an Australian soldier call Flanders so he died in his ancestral home. We then drove to the Tyne Cot Cemetery the largest British Commonwealth was cemetery in the world there are 11,956 soldiers burries here. There are speakers that read out the names of the dead and then make you walk from the back though so you have to see the size of it. There was a group of young girl and boy military cadets there when we where ... read more

Tues 1st Dec - Arrived in the Netherlands at 11.30am (saw a paddock beside the motorway enroute that was part of Germany!). Met Marjolein's mother who had made salad rolls for lunch. Had a chat, exchanged some gifts and then had some homemade cake - YUM!Then her father piled us all in the van and took us sightseeing. Went to a very large American War Cemetery - 8000+ graves. Finished the day off by taking us out to a GREEK restaurant for dinner, then drove us back to our hotel in Brussels, but not before giving us all some more gifts - wonderful friendly people. Weds 2nd Dec - Had a sleep in, then did a bit more shopping! Found a nice cafe and had waffles, strawberries, ice cream & cream for lunch. Sorted out our suitcases ... read more
