Like trying to choose at a giant international ice cream parlor, where all the flavors are exciting and inviting, we sit down each month to decide where our next destination might be. We can only choose one flavor per month, so we have to be smart about our choice. Pick something that you don’t like and you may be stuck for a whole month with a half-eaten, melted, soggy-cone mess that no amount ... Read Full Entry

Beautiful Belgium
You make me want to visit those beautiful cities. Once again, the photographer's talent shines through. Great job, David.I just love that architecture. I keep thinking,"those poor residents of Ypres ". Having seen photos of Nuremberg and its' destruction i can imagine what it must have been like. Do you know what the Allies were trying to destroy in Ypres ? Nuremberg was a big rail center. Can't wait to hear from your next adventure !!

Thanks for the nice compliments. It was nice to see that Ypres was rebuilt to its original beauty; many towns weren't so fortunate. The true beauty is that I'm back "home"! Thanks again for reading!!

Premium ice cream in the mad tourist season
Choosing a great spot is tricky in the summer when everyone is out sampling, but what a great choice you ended up with! While Brugges and Amsterdam are outstanding, Ghent is both lovely and much more livable in the tourist season (though I adore all of them whenever, really). Your photos and prose, of course, show charming Ghent at its best! Hope Nanci's dad is better and so happy to see both of you home together on the road.I just crossed back into challenging Bolivia; I so understand your desire to have a soft landing every so often.

Premium...
It is nice to be back together again. We would surely love to get to Amsterdam soon. Bruges was beautiful, but crowded. Ghent seemed just right. Another place that if we ever settled down, might be nice for a longer stay. Nanci's father is well and should be getting around soon. Good luck in Bolivia! We have only been to Peru, but hope to go someday. Thanks for the nice comments, Tara!

Belgium - agree that it is surprisingly nice
We totally agree that Belgium is surprisingly nice place. It seems to us like Belgium is a hidden gem, hidden in plain sight. We went to Belgium because we wanted to see the really strange villages Baarle-Hertog and Baarle-Nassau (do have a look at our blogs from there if you haven't heard of them). After that we spent a few days road tripping in Belgium and we loved it. /Ake

Surprising...
We really thought Belgium was a nice place. All the things that everyone loves about Europe in one place. We had not heard of these other places and will read your blogs about them. We always seem to find out about these lesser known places after we leave. Perhaps. a reason to visit again! Thanks for reading and commenting, Ake!

Beers voted best in the World
That is why Dave wanted to celebrate a birthday in Belgium. He was perfectly happy. We enjoyed our time in Ghent. We didn't make it to Antwerp but intend on going back. Glad Nanci's father is doing better. Sad you were forced a be alone in such a horrible city. Plenty of history to keep you busy.

Birthday Beers....
A good place to have a celebration beer! All tasty, but very strong. Ghent was a nice hub to visit more of a country than we usually do. Highly recommended! Thanks for reading!
