Words cannot describe how ecstatic I am about not having to get up and jump into a hot, stuffy car today. I also manage to get a well deserved lie in too as we sleep until
11am(that extra hour makes all the difference!). We realise upon waking that we have nothing to eat our cereal (taken from our bag of food supplies) out of except a pint glass we stole from a bar in Ibiza (hidden in our luggage), as we remember we haven’t paid for plates or cutlery. It doesn't seem to faze Greg though and he drinks down a cup of cereal like it’s the most natural thing in the world. After our ‘drink and go’ brekkie, we head out to the tram station and spend about 5 minutes on the actual tram trying to work out how to buy a ticket, as it is all in German (imagine that). We eventually purchase one ticket but then realise no one else seems to be buying one so we just wait to see what happens. Nothing as it turns out, and we are kicking ourselves. A wee old lady gets on at one of the stops and tries to talk
to us and we have to smile politely and hope she isn't giving us into trouble for something. She gives up when she realises we don't speak German, or just thinks we are really rude. Once we get nearer the centre of Vienna, we're not sure which stop to get off at. There's an old German guy on the tram who can see were confused (maybe all the head scratching and half getting on and off at each stop gave us away) and tries to tell us via lots of hand flapping and pointing that the main underground station is the next stop. We offer a meagre 'danke' and get off at the next stop as suggested. Thankfully the underground is even easier to navigate and we manage to find our way into the historic centre without incident. Every building we pass is magnificent and grand, they are so beautiful and there are so many to see. After our historical sightseeing tour, we think it's about time we head over to the Austrian beer festival that Greg has discovered is on this week. Excitingly (and coincidentally) enough, it's located inside the Prater theme park which is home to the Ferris
Wheel featured in the James Bond film 'The Living Daylights' which makes Greg a very happy boy. After about 20 photos of the wheel from various angles, we head to the beer festival next door. It's like a mini Oktoberfest but with less stag do's. Luckily the tents are free to enter today, so we make our way into the nearest tent. There's an Austrian folk band playing, lots of lederhosen on display, and many a drunk local. The atmosphere is great and we soon get into the spirit of things by ordering a 2 pint Stein each. Another one after that and were soon getting up on the tables joining in with the locals and doing some pint swinging and clinking. I have images of Greg being pulled up on stage like Clark Griswald from national lampoons european vacation, but thankfully he doesn't.
We're getting hungry after so much beer so we order some bratwurst to keep us going. I'm not usually a big fan, but these actually taste really nice, not like the ones you buy in Asda. By now it's only
6pm and as we are half cut and don't really know our way about in
town, we decide the sensible option would be to head back in the direction of the hotel. Surprisingly we make it back without any mistakes and pick up a few more beer for the hotel on our way. The next few hours are spent blissfully drinking beer and watching movies.
