Salzburg: On The Road to Vienna

Jack and I managed to turn a 5 hour drive to Vienna from Munich into a 10 hour drive today. Not everyone can do such a feat. Along the way we searched for the island castle of King Ludwig, "Herrenchiemsee". We never found the elusive road sign to signal us to turn to catch the ferry to the island where the castle still sits long after its mad (as in crazy) owner has gone. The car GPS instead lead us to a boat ramp used for the multitude of sail boats on the Chiemsee. We then took a quick side trip to Traunreut to visit Jack's former office, nice memory lane experience.

Next stop Salzburg for some overdue lunch and obligatory photo ops of the local culture. We most inadvertently saw some of the sights that were used in the movie "The Sound of Music". No ticket required for our wandering round tour of the old town of Salzburg and money saved for my kind of souvenir, a Longchamps bag.

The final 3 hours of the car trip to Vienna went quickly with me writing tax research briefs for my class and Jack gleefully getting beyond the 1200 km mark on his car so he can finally try out the "passing gear".

We arrived at our hotel via the back alley and narrowly got the car to the door. We are in one of the 20 rooms here at the Romischer Kaiser. The front desk clerk is a jack of all trades, concierge, bellman and custodian. Our "suite", Marie Therese, must have been the height of luxury in about 1970 and features a lovely entrance hall just barely large enough for use to stand up our suitcases!
