One glance out the window of my dorm room at the Dresdner Hütte, 2308m above sea level in the Stubai Alps, was all it took to confirm the good news: the miserable weather of the previous three days had finally come to an end! Ten minutes later I was the first one downstairs at the breakfast buffet, and an hour later I was on my way - hopeful that the clear weather would hold, but unwilling to trust that it would do so for more than a couple of hours. Despite the lack of rain I had decided to put my wet weather gear on over the top of my regular hiking clothes to combat the cold, with the temperature hovering not far above zero. True to form though, within about ten minutes of starting the ... read more

Fresh from my four-day tour of the Watzmann in the Bavarian Alps, two nights each in Salzburg and Innsbruck were all it took to have me itching to get back into the mountains, and less than an hour's bus ride south of Innsbruck lay the perfect place to do so: the Stubai Alps. This time I would need to carry something a little more substantial than a day-pack, as I had lined up eight consecutive nights at a string of mountain huts located along the Stubaier Höhenweg (High-level Route). A circular route measuring roughly 80km, it starts and finishes in the town of Neustift in the Stubai Valley, climbing straight up one side of the valley and then remaining high up in the mountains (above 2000m) for over a week, as it circumnavigates the Stubaital - ... read more

Hello everybody it's me again ? Today we went to the end of the valley to go up the Stubaital Glacier. It was fantastic. Any picture I post would Never do it justice!! So far this week has been the best so far of the 3 weeks we have been in Europe. Our apartment is great. It is much larger than the one we had in Germany. But one of the extras we receive is the Super Stubai Card that let's us travel up all the lift systems, all the buses, and even a tram from here to Innsbruck and back. Free with this card. And also the mountain bob sled I mentioned in an earlier blog. Did you see it on you tube? Here's some images from today. Lowell... read more

Hello blog viewers, Today we moved about 2 hours from our last location. About 30 miles north of the Italian border. We had been in this valley 23 years ago. It has not changed, it is just as beautiful as ever. We will try to go up as many lifts as we can. We hope to hike a lot this week if the weather is nice. And I think it will be. Our apartment is much bigger than the last. It's about twice the size. Hope you like the pictures ? Lowell... read more
