Lakefront from the movie
This is now a place for seminars and meetings. Had a 7:20 taxi waiting to take me to the train station, so did the hustle to get packed and down there. Was easy enough to buy a ticket through a vending machine and hop the train, which took about 2,1/2 hours. Yet another taxi, another hotel. This is a modern one, so has a lot more space and an actual counter in the bathroom for my razor and stuff.
My Sound of Music Tour was at 2, so I did some postcards, found a post office and paid a ton for stamps. Wow. Had lunch at a place near the meeting point. The Hungarian Goulash Soup was much thicker here than in Hungary, and had a lot more paprika. Was still good, but it was interesting to notice the differences. I also had a Salzburg Schnitzel with Potato Dumpling. It was thinly pounded veal wrapped around mushrooms and ham and then sauteed. Canned mushrooms????? Oh, please help me. I couldn't believe it. And I have found that potato dumplings are either spaetzle, or kissing cousins to spaetzle.
The Sound of Music Tour was very full. The guide was a kick. She had a good sense of humor, very
One of the mountains
Salzburg is surrounded by great snow covered mountains. This is one of the biggies. similar to the guide my brother, sister in law and I had on a dam tour in Nevada. She would play songs from the CD, sing along and try to get all of us to sing. I have to say that she had a great voice as did some of the other passengers. I, on the other hand, just sat and ran the songs in my head. I know, I don't use my "in my own head voice" very often in general, but when it comes to singing, I am right there in my head and only my head.
On the tour, we saw the palace that was used for the lake scenes for the Von Trapp house. We saw the gazebo, the tree line road where Julie Andrews sang the I Have Confidence song. We drove by the place that was used for the front of the house, but the bus couldn't get close to it for good shots. They drove us up to a Lake District where we went past some just breathtaking scenery. We stopped in a town for an hour to check out the church used for the wedding scene and to have Apple Strudel
Good Land, I'm a Tourist
Embrace it Brendan, embrace it. if we wanted it. Hoo Boy did I ever. Had mine with vanilla sauce and a hot chocolate. The tour ended at the Mirabell Gardens, where they filmed a lot of the Do Re Mi scenes. I have to say that even though I was taking a tour on a bus painted with characters from a movie, I really enjoyed today. It was nice to sit back and be entertained, told where to go, where and what to eat (strong recommendation really) and the mood on the bus was just fun. I am very glad I booked it. Really wish I had more than just one more day here in Salzburg.
After the tour, I walked over the foot bridge and found my way up to a beer garden. It was founded by Augustinian monks in 1621 and maintains the traditional brewing craft. There was a stand with heavy stone mugs, so I took one, paid, had it filled with beer straight from a wooden barrel. Then, I went to one of the stands and got some Weiswurst, sauerkraut and German potato salad. I also had to get a pretzel. While sitting there eating, I flashed on one of
The Lakes District
Great viewpoint on the trip the Pink Panther movies where the agents were trying to kill Clouseau at the Oktoberfest. The one agent was dressed as a woman and had poison needles coming out of his bra. When he hugged Clouseau to kill him, the giant pretzel stuck on the needles. I know, it's silly, but sitting there alone, it really amused me.

I'm glad you enjoyed your sound of music tour. Did you see anyone wearing curtain attaire? I'm sure the views were spectacular, with pics not doing justice. Have an apple strudel for me, please.
