Wednesday March 2, 2011 (Skip) When we first started writing about our travels in Panama we mentioned the difficult time we experienced with the rental car folks at the airport. I believe sufficient time has passed between our unfortunate experience at the airport, for there to be an objective evaluation of where we are at this point with this rental Company. The Rental company's home page is: http://www.europcar.com/ When I arrived at the Europcar rental desk, the first problem I encountered was no reservation for the vehicle. After arguing for several minutes and showing my printed confirmation from the website they agreed that I did indeed have a reservation. The second discussion centered around third party insurance. I finally agreed and the tab was $13 per day.(see below explanation) The third disparity occurred when I was ... read more

3/1/11 (Barb) Both of us are feeling a little queasy today so we're taking it easy. Skip is sleeping right now...I've been reading. We did go for a little ride around Santiago. We got here in the dark so we had no idea what this city was like. It's a pretty big city...3rd largest I believe in Panama. It's the cleanest city I've seen so far. As we drove around the country side I did notice that the homes were kept up more. Seems to be less trash and such around...some but not as much as I've seen in other places. I like this city's looks. Still the same kind of stuff here tho..like horses tied up in front of a house just waiting to be rode or just ridden! That cracks me up..and lots of ... read more

(Barb) I just wanted to add something to yesterday's blog. I wrote it late last nite and I was tired and I neglected to add the most important part. I want to thank God that we are both safe and came out of it unscathed. I also want to say that of 'all the men I've loved before' Skip has to be the only man I've ever known to be so calm and composed during any crisis. No matter what has happened since the beginning....the flights, the car (and you folks have not gotten the car saga yet..it's coming), the robbery, driving in pouring rain over cloud-covered rainforest mountains in a car with bald tires, dealing with ANYTHING, he is calm and always looks for the positive. His every cloud has a silver lining attitude is ... read more

2/28/11 (Barb) Just when you think life is calm and serene the crap hits the fan. This morning Skip and I were sitting and drinking coffee while munching on fresh pineapple and papaya and Skip was reading and I was chatting with my friend Mary B. on facebook. All was peaceful. Then just as I finished chatting Skip says to me (and folks I'm not using quotation marks cuz it's just too much work for this)...so Skip says..Barb is this yours and he shows me a little black bundle that I did not recognize. I said no. So I”m reading my email and he says Are you trying to drive me crazy by playing a joke on me? And I say what are u talking about. And he says My 2 wallets (he uses 2..one for ... read more

Saturday, December 26, 2009 - Puerto Quetzal (the port for Antigua), Guatemala. We traveled about one hour on the Pan American Highway to our destination, a working coffee plantation. Our hosts (grandmother, son and two college student granddaughters) welcomed us to this 80 year old farm which they have owned for three years. . Located at about 4000 ft on one of Guatemala’s volcanic mountains the property was owned in the 1940’s by the then dictator of Guatemala. The setting was beautiful, our hosts gracious but there was clear evidence that Guatemala is still a third world country. The house had an outdoor kitchen and the coffee cups we used were being hand washed by a worker. No dishwashing machines or subzero refrigerators anywhere in sight. In the living room, we were shown a current somewhat ... read more

Before traveling to Escudo de Veraguas, Sandcastle was flushed out of the Chagres River as the flood gates of the Gatun Lake Dam were opened to spill off excess water dumped into it by torrential downpours of rain for three days running! Once out of the river we had to make up our mind whether to push on to Bocas del Toro, an overnight trip, or go back to Shelter Bay Marina, a two and a half hour trip. Bocas won as we didn’t want to spend the money for the slip. However, the seas were sloppy, bumpy, the deck wet and it is raining. No matter, on we go to Bocas or Escudo de Veraguas as it turned out. The night passage was uneventful, wet but uneventful. The next morning with the island of Escudo ... read more

Central America Caribbean » Panama » Veraguas » Coiba Island November 29th 2008

Coiba island was used by the goverment as a Prision since 1919 , for serious criminals. It takes aprox. 3 hours in a boat to get there from santiago which is like 4 hrs away from Panama city and considering this distances this guys wont like swimming that much. Also because of this the forest has remained pretty much untouched. Now days there is just a few of them probably one by now of this criminals who is still on the island and with the police they sell handcrafts for their income and talking to them u can find out they will prefer to stay there because they live in a relax way and far from the problems of the society. To visit Coiba you need autorization from the National Enviroment Authority, and they have some ... read more
