My unplanned assault on Panama City ended up being an exclamation point of sorts at the end of a long journey. It was my intention to enter Panama and bed down somewhere a couple of hours from the border so that I could make a run for the canal the next day but I ended up calling an audible in a desperate bid to end this thing sooner rather than later. The day started out strangely. I picked up a couple who were hitchiking at the turnoff for Dominical as I was driving out. He was an expat from Hawaii who had come to Costa Rica 15 years ago to escape the high cost of living. She was his Costa Rican wife. They were going to Golfito which meant that I would be able to get ... read more

Today I drank my usual numerous cups of coffee until Geoff woke up. Then we made some egg sandwiches & headed out to mail our last box home. Today was a very long day solely devoted to mailing that stupid box. Before we left we had to pack up all our stuff & move to the dorms for the night. Our room was reserved & we didn't mention that we were staying until this morning so we're S.O.L. & in the dorms tonight. Oh well! Hopefully tomorrow night they'll have a room for us. I booked our tickets to San Blas this morning. All on the phone. It always makes me a bit nervous conducting business all in Spanish on the phone. But I did it (the woman helping me did have to repeat things a ... read more

I woke up really early today. Someone walked down the stairs over our head with a roller suitcase & went bang bang bang down each step. It was around 5:30 am. Really thoughtful. I'm sure the entire hostel heard them. So, I'm up & typing & waiting for a more appropriate hour to go out & buy some coffee. At 7 I headed out & walked a bit. It's still a bit sketchy feeling at this time of day so I followed a couple of the police (there's tons of them in this area because the President's house is a few streets away, which you cannot walk within 3-4 blocks of) to a Fonda where I ordered a grande coffee that the guy served to me in a large styrofoam soup bowl. It made me laugh ... read more

Travel day. Woohoo (said with very little enthusiasm). I guess I shouldn't complain. There aren't very many of these days left for us. We'll be home before we know it. The countdown is on, 22 days to go. Yikes. We packed up & made a quick breakfast sandwich to start us off right. We caught our first bus in Santa Catalina at 7:15 am. My favorite passenger today was the guy who got on the bus with a chainsaw & gas. They just set the chainsaw down in the aisle & we smelled the gas until he got off the bus. Gotta love it. We arrived in Sona at 9:30 & were placed on a direct bus to Panama City. Perfect! We thought we'd have to go through Santiago. We had about 1.5 hours to wait ... read more

I left the Lost and Found at about 8am as I expected a long day's travelling to get to Panama City. Originally, I had planned to stop half way to go and explore some slightly less travelled spots along the Pacific coast, but in the end, a combination of wanting to save some time and hoping to catch up with Ana and Luka, made me decide to do the trip in one go. The first bus ($2.5) was an hour's ride to David, where I could get the bus to Panama city. When I got to David's bus station, as I was looking for the Panama bound bus, I spotted Rob and his bike. He and Gerald were just arriving from a day in Boquete and and on their way to the capital. We opted for ... read more

As we head to South America, the take home message from this post is that two and a half months in Central America is not nearly enough. For this trip though, that is as much time as we could reasonably spare. We debated whether a wrap up post for Central America was justified. It isn't a continent or even an island. Just a skinny bit of land between two massive lumps. Then again we have visited 9 countries in a very interesting part of the world. So we decided it might be worth drawing a few threads together. We made it to Guatemala, Cuba, Belize, Nicaragua, El Salvador, Honduras, Costa Rica, Panama and Mexico. Mexico, of course, is not really part of Central America but for the purposes of this post we will treat it as ... read more

I couldn’t do what I wanted to do in Panama, so I sulked and came home early. To be fair, this is only the second time in the last five years’ travelling that I haven’t managed to get to where I wanted to go because of logistical and security (rather than simple lack of time) reasons. The first was in Rwanda when, despite getting to the towns at the northern and southern ends of Lake Kivu, I failed to reach the town in the middle of the Lake’s eastern shore, despite trying from three different directions. The buses and the road conditions simply wouldn’t play ball. In Panama, my main aim had been to visit the site of Scotland’s short-lived and tragic attempt at an empire in the 1690s. While much of my school-taught Scottish history ... read more

Panama City in a nutshell...

Panama has been wonderful. We got our 5th into storage on Feb 28th, spent the night at a hotel near the Miami airport. The next morning we flew out to Panama City. It was a great flight. Just 2 1/2 hours and no time change. Piece of cake. Our B&B host in Panama had her Taxi favourite pick us up at the Panama airport. He was a fun guy. He spoke pretty good english. He dropped us off at our B&B, took the hostess grocery shopping and came back and picked up Larry and I and another couple in our B&B and took us to a great dinner place. Before going to dinner he took all of us to the store so I could buy a cell phone. He was great. Interpreted for me, set it ... read more

The night before we arrived in Panama, we saw ships waiting to enter the Panama Canal. All night long! The next morning, the line was naturally very long. Luckly we didn't have to go into it but we stoped in Colon, Panama. A bus brought us to Panama City, which is the capital of Panama. We did a tour around the city. Panama is a city of contrasts: the old and the new. We saw the old inner city which is a UNESCO World Heritage Site and also saw gleaming, modern sky scrapers. After having lunch we left Panama City for the famous Miraflores Locks of the Panama Canal. We also visited the Panama Canal Museum there and watched a couple of ships go through the Canal. Another cruise ship was about to go through the ... read more

3/9/11 (Barb) Well I guess we ended the blog a little bit too soon. We didn't have to leave the hotel til midnight so we spent Monday morning doing up some laundry and packing. Well I was packing and Skip said he wasn't packing yet..too depressing. I said that when I get a gut feeling to do something I usually did it or I ended up being sorry if I didn't...boy was I right! Around noon I started to get queasy. I went to our room about 1 pm and got into bed with chills. I knew I had a fever. I slept for a few hours then woke up to having to go to the bathroom....diarrhea ….I went a few more times and then I took some Amodiam AD but that didn't stop it. By ... read more
