This morning, after an hour long bus ride south, we took a boat to Iguana Island Wildlife Refuge off the eastern coast of the Azuero Peninsula. We arrived in Pedasi on the small beach where open motor boats were waiting to take us to the island. There was a pleasant breeze as we walked, unsuspecting, through the water in groups of four to hop into our respective boats. Before we knew it we were off for a very choppy, painful twenty minute bone shattering ride to the island. Had I known how painful the ride would be I don’t think I would have gone. After landing we took a hike across the island where we saw a crater where a previously detonated bomb was once used as a preventative measure by the US during WWII. Some ... read more

Hotel Cubita provided generous breakfast buffet each day with many different options. Over the three days we stayed here I had scrambled eggs and flavored drinkable yogurts. I tasted beef jerky, liver and onions, heart, sausages, runny oatmeal and terrible breads. the guava jam was very good but interestingly the other jam-like options were very grainy and had way too much sugar. Panamanians love their sugar. The hotel/resort has a spa next to the pool and a small grocery store, gift shop and florist within walking distance. It appears that many weddings and meetings take place here. We all enjoyed watching the slow and graceful entrances of beautifully gowned women and handsome young men as they approached the courtyard for a wedding. On another day several of us spoke to teachers as they broke from a ... read more

October 29, 2018 Before leaving Panama City this morning we visited El Chorrillo Neighborhood. It is well known in Panama for an incident the Panamanians call Black Christmas. In 1989, the United States invaded Panama in an attempt to overthrow military dictator Manuel Noriega, who had been indicted in the US on drug trafficking charges and was accused of suppressing democracy in Panama and endangering US nationals. Noriega’s headquarters were situated in the middle of this neighbourhood. On December 20, 1989, 4 days before Xmas, the US bombed Noriega’s headquarters. But of course, being in the middle of a crowded neighbourhood there were a lot of civilian casualties. There is a painted sign on a wall that says « Santa Claus brought bombs, this Christmas, to avenue A, December 20, 1989. » We then proceeded out ... read more

Discover the vibrant yet charmingly laid-back Azuero Peninsula, known for the warmth of its people, the pristine beauty of its beaches and the effervescence of its festivals Long considered the cradle of traditional Panamanian customs and folklore, the Azuero Peninsula now one of the fastest-growing regions in an already economically flourishing country. As an American expat who has called Panama’s Azuero Peninsula home for over 20 years, I can attest to the amazing transformation the region is undergoing. The Azuero Peninsula offers discriminating travelers all of the amenities of urban living while retaining the laid-back atmosphere and easy charm that Panama City’s “capitalinos” co... read more

2/21/2011 (BARB)Not much going on today...we took our dirty laundry down the street and it cost us $4 to have them wash, dry and fold them..of course the drying was on a clothesline in the sun..so there are closepin marks on the clothes...LOL...that's ok..just so funny... Went for a short ride and ended up on another beach much like the other ones... We saw a housing project going up and I wanted Skip to stop and pretend like we were interested in buying to see the inside of the house and the price..but he didn't go for it. Down below us is a panadería which is a bakery and a kind of a place to get quick food like pizza or an empenada (fried dough w/ chicken or cheese or beef inside). Anyway we went down ... read more

2/20/2011 (Barb) Oh Lord what a day! I thought today would be kinda laid back and maybe even boring as we had nothing in particular planned. We went to breakfast and once again had a hard time with ordering..I was ok with my omuleta...but Skip wanted what he had yesterday and we had no idea what it was called. Some woman jumped in to help..she was from Miami and was orginally from Panama...yea us! Went back to the hostel and Mike told us about some old churches and how to get to the ocean not far from here. So off we were.... First we went looking for one of the old churches and yes it was very old and beautiful. Very ornate. Took some pictures and then off to the ocean. Got lost a few times ... read more

Travels of February 19th (Skip) Today pretty much started as usual, coffee near by, cool breeze gently passing by, the sounds of the town coming to life and me at peace just taking in everything and enjoying. Everything in our present reality has changed from the USA lifestyle to a country who's lifestyle harkens to a past lifestyle in the US. Not so much on rules, rules and rules but more on living. What comes to mind immediately are the electrical cable running from the main power line directly across the road to this Hostel; bare wires and plenty of jumper cables. (our bureaucrats would be aghast) Other areas of interest that I find pleasing are the open air cafe's found everywhere and how the food is served. Certainly not up to American standards but ... read more

February 18th (SKIP)Finally climbed out of bed around 7:30 and met Mike on the porch overlooking the main street. The town of Chitre is already coming to life. Mike had already prepared some good Panamaian coffee which I eagerly accepted. Barb arrived on the scene a short while later with a great need for coffee. After spending some time discussing many topics Barb and I decided to venture forth and try the little food stand that Mike recommended. It seems this food stand only prepares hot breakfast items between the hours of 6am to 8am. We arrived at 8:45am and therefore only a few prepared breakfast items were still available. The coffee was great and we are now determined to arrive earlier tomorrow morning. Our plans for the rest of this day is to journey to ... read more

February 17th (SKIP)Arrived at Mikes Backpacking Hostel early afternoon without much problem thanks to Miss Garmin. We checked in, hostel is located on the second floor of a main street, and our rental is parked next to the entrance of the hostel. Well, when I went down to the car for the purpose of collecting our packs I noticed that my drivers side mirror, glass only, was missing. I looked down to the pavement and there is was broken in many pieces. Should have pulled closer to the curb!! Anyways, another opportunity awaits traveling through the process of replacing the mirror, always assuming the price will be affordable. We are now in the town of Chitre and staying for 5 days at Mikes Backpacking Hostel and very quaint hostel on the second and third floor located ... read more

February 16th Tuesday (BARB) Alrighty then...always a surprise in store when you travel. This morning after a nice leisurely breakfast we went to check out and were very pleasantly surprised to find our bill substantially lower than we expected. Since we arrived at 3 am and stayed the rest of that nite and again last nite we figured they would charge us for 2 nites...they only charged us for one nite and gave us a significant discount on our dinner last nite. Very cool! When we arrived back at the airport to pick up our car, another surprise awaited us. Apparently, altho we have insurance coverage thru Skip's AMEX card, we were not aware that Panama charges a standard fee for 3rd party insurance which amounted to $13 a day...Panamanian law. So we added approximately $260 ... read more
