Boquete
View from our room. From Bocos del Toro we headed to Boquete which in in the middle of a mountain valley just over 1000m. It had a nice breezy and cool climate and it was a nice change from the heat of the beach.
It is a popular place for agriculture, growing lots of fruit and vegetables and famous for its coffee growing. We got lucky when we arrived and managed to find a really nice place to stay. The Hostel was on the river and our room had its own balcony looking onto the river with great views of the surrounding valley, it only cost 8 pounds a night so a real bargain.
As the town is fairly high up it would sometimes get misty in the late afternoon and we got to see some great rainbows. We would just sit on our balcony having a few drinks and listen to the flow of the river whilst watching the rainbows coming and going over our heads. Again one of the many times on the trip where I have just sat back being very thankful for how lucky we are to be doing what we are doing.
Whilst there we did a
few walks around the surrounding hills of the town and walked past a few coffee fincas. We didn´t do anything tiring just took it nice and easy.
Some of the great things we loved about the town was there were some great places to eat and I got to have some trout which was caught fresh from the river that runs through the town. It was gorgeous and the nicest I have ever had, cooked perfectly and just melted in my mouth. It´s the the first time I have tasted freshly caught trout and a lot better than the one I usually have from Tescos!
Another great thing, the booze was cheap. Michelle bought a litre of wine for 1 pound and said it tasted good enough, it was from Argentina and she has started to like the wine from there so should be good when we finally arrive there. She could of got it cheaper as there were ones for 70p a litre but she is such a snob and money waster she had to go for the expensive one!! For me there was a litre bottle of rum for 2 pounds and it tasted very nice
and sweet but can tell it was cheap as it gave me nasty hangovers, but oh well it was worth the cost! Since we arrived in Panama there has not been a day when we haven´t had a drink!
After Boquete we headed south to San Carlos and more beaches. We had been recomended a place to stay by some fellow Brits we met a few months ago and have been keeping in touch with them. It was a bit of hassle to get here, 8 hours of travelling and unfortunately I don´t think the place was worth it but the people who we stayed with were great.
The hostel we were staying at was a guys large house with swimming pool right on the beach all very nice but a bit more than we are used to paying nearly double, 15 pounds a night. The house was like a batchelor pad as there were four guys living there, the owner and his son from Panama and two Canadian friends, one retired. They were so friendly and couldn´t do enough for us and told us to treat his house like our own. They would take us to the
Funky Chicken
Check out the hair do on that! shops each day to buy food and booze and always checking we were alright. We got to hear some great stories from them all, from old vietnam war stories to UFOs they have seen over the town to dodgy dealings with the panamainian goverment back in the eighties and it was nice to be be talking about crazy and different things.
The beach the house was on was not as nice as what we have been seeing over the last few weeks so that was a bit disapointing. So we just stayed around the pool and chilled as there wasn´t really anything else to do during the day. We only stayed a few nights and then headed to Panama City for our last stop in Central America.
A story for you. One of the funny things at the house was the pet dog Gizmo, similar to a bulldog. The owner wanted to have some pups and they had a friend who had a female dog who also wanted some so they left the bitch at the house for them to get it on. The first few days the male dog didn´t want to know but then he must
have got the idea and just happened to be the first night we were there, all we had was these 2 dogs at it constantly for the next few nights, lots of heavy panting! At first I felt sorry for the bitch but she was just as bad, as soon as he had finished she would start teasing him and it would all start all over again! One of the funny things is the the dog is a bit old and his back legs couldn´t take the toll so kept buckleing occassionally, but he wouldn´t let this stop him, he knew he had to take advantage of this before she went!
