The ´Ruta de Flores´, El Salvador, back of truck experience - great!
A 'Viragok utja' egy teherauto platojarol. Igy kezdodott El Salvador!? Our first night in El Salvador was best described as uneventful. After bussing it from Guatemala City to Santa Ana we arrived weary but looking forward to what other travellers had described to us as a hidden gem in Central America. After a predictable ´getting lost´ episode on the local bus (going into and back out of the city, as we planned to get off when we saw something that looked like a downtown, but never did..), we finally found one of the few hostels in town. It was around 7pm so we set off to explore the city in search of the necessary beers and food. And this is the uneventful bit - this town is effectively closed after 7.30pm! There was no where to eat, and the only bar we could find had a jail like locked door and was advertising its strict no-guns policy (so we decided on the take out option..). It was a strange start to El Salvador, but definitely not typical of this great country.
So not surprisingly we left early the next day in search of a recommended drive through the country called ´Route del Flores´. While waiting for the bus we got lucky and were offered a ride in the back of a truck with a local guy taking a couple of Ozzy girls on the road we wanted and off to some unknown beach he happened to have a hotel on.. It seemed like a good opportunity, and it was! The country drive was nice, but perhaps surfing the back of the truck was the best bit. The beach we went to was really something special (long, empty, with great sand and big waves), and his hotel was good too, all that remained was to get the coconuts for the cocktails and crack open the beers.
Ezek utan ertheto modon masnap If only all beaches were as empty as this
Mig a buszra vartunk felbukkant egy helyi 2 ausztral leanyzo tarsasagaban, akik elegge megbizhatonak latszottak, igy felpattantunk a platora es irany a tengerpart! A part es a hotel ahol kikotottunk tenyleg kulonlegesnek bizonyult. Hosszu elhagyatott part, fantasztikus, puha fekete homok, orias hullamok es meleg tenger, es mindez 5 meterre a hotel medencejetol, ahol mi voltunk az egyetlen vendegek. Melton meg is unnepeltuk a szerencsenket friss kokuszdio+rum koktellal.
After the morning cup of tea in the pool to sooth the headache we headed off the lake Coatepeque with the Ozzy´s for a couple of days attempting to climb the nearby volcano (and arriving too late), and climbing the volcano (and skiing down, minus the skis). It seemed appropriate afterward to visit a nearby town (like Pompei in Italy) buried by volcanic ash in 600AD.
Igy harmadnap ujra probalkoztunk Coctails in the making
Then having said goodbye to the Ozzy´s we headed off to Nicaragua and the city of Leon, a colourful and friendly town providing the only opportunity in the world to do ´volcano boarding´(sliding down a volcano on a piece of ´custom made´ wood). Theoretically there is not much skill to it, just hold on and point yourself straight down the 50deg hill without trying to use the brake (your feet). Its no surprise Briggi made it in one go in a perfectly straight line without braking, while I took the more creative zig-zag route and fell off three times. Some things never change.. We recommend to anyone interested in trying it out.
Megeri! Megnezni a videot es kiprobalni a boardozast!
Next stop was the colonial town of Granada to admire the buildings and lake. There are some great looking islands on the lake with a good opportunity to relax and perfect not-doing-much, but sadly we didn´t have time for that.
Instead
we kept going south with a final stop at San Juan del Sur to see some surf beaches (but didn´t get wet ourselves sadly - next time we hope..). And that was the conclusion to our short trip in Nicaragua.
Vegso allomasunk Nicaraguaban San Juan del Sur szorfparadicsom volt, ahol mi csak megmartoztunk, mig a tobbiek lelkesen lovagoltak a hullamokat. Talan legkozelebb. Of the two countries El Salvador was our favourite. People there are very open and friendly and are still not used to seeing tourists everywhere and so treat you with interest (without trying to get your $) which was really great. A country definitely not to be missed on any Central American tours!
