It doesn't matter if you're the type of person who likes to learn about new cultures, the type who likes to shop for souvenirs, or the type who seeks adventure, Matagalpa is a city you MUST visit. Here you will find recycled art, one of a kind hand-crafted treasures, delectable coffee, and breath taking vegetation. When you come to Matagalpa the first place you should visit is Casa Dorotea: Families Especiales, a recycled art program for people with special needs. The center is run by nuns from the Catholic church who began this non-profit organization with just one program dedicated to Sister Dorathy, who had spent her life helping unfortunate people of the Amazon in Brazil. They not only make use of all their resources, but also provide jobs to handicapped people, who would have been ... read more

Update... There were just under 600 photos taken in the weeks leading up to the wedding, the wedding, and after.... this is a SMALL VERY SMALL selection. Enjoy! I do not even know where to start! It's Wednesday morning. Mom Dad and Ben just left for the airport. Cassi and LB left the morning after the wedding and Liz left yesterday morning. So now all that are left of the eight are Kristy and Arielle. The wedding was awesome and went smoothly. I don't even know how to describe. Having problems with internet connection, which is why photos have not been uploaded yet. Working on that.... read more

Nicaragua Information Central Hotel Colonial in Somoto number is 8999.9266. The clerk Ariel speaks English. Hotel Panamericano in Somoto 2722.2355. There are not pay phones here. If necessary you need to ask to borrow somone´s cell phone to call or there are fono centers and places to call from cybers. (see spanish guide below) The USD to Nican Cordoba exchange rate is 21.20 or thereabouts. US dollars are accepted. For money, I would also bring your ATM card. Travellers checks are rare. Better with cash and ATM cards. People who exchange money on the street are legit and it is okay to change money with them. Just ask ¨Cual es su rato?¨ and he will have a calculator to show you the exchange rate. In Managua you have to take taxis, not busses. I am checking ... read more

Answers to Aunt Lori´s comment and Jeri´s comment. We expect about 500 people to watch the parade and hang out in the non-catholic, evangelical, church during the wedding. We have invited about 160 people and have ordered 175 plates for the private reception. Thank you for the thoughts! Jeri! Yes, call and see if there are rooms at Colonial first and then check out Panamericano 2nd. ............. I am exhaaaaausted. I came into Estelí to get stuff done. First went directly to Doña Moncha´s to give her one of the USA bags that Mom sent me, and to finally give her a wedding invite and see how many people will be coming. I only stayed for like an hour, but it was going on noon by the time I got back into Estelí. Went to the ... read more

Okay, feeling better. Man Dengue sucks. Felt like a truck hit me during the night for about a week. Am in Esteli for a hot minute to meet new volunteers and tell them how awesome Somoto is (i am rolling my eyes) and convince one of them to come to a site near me in August. By the way, where is the time goooooing?! My family is coming in LESS THAN TWO WEEKS! Which means the rest of you are coming in like 3 weeks! WTF?! And then we get married and you all fly home and then the new volulnteers get in and then we have our Close of Service Conference in August, too.....and then I turn 28 in September and then Halloween in October and November is for graduations and goodbye parties since my ... read more

Well, it's official. I am half Nicaraguan. I don't feel too different, except that I feel I have more clout with the family and in Nicaragua. Okay, with no further ado, photos.... The judge preached for a few minutes before the actual signing, also reading from the Nican constitution, and then preaching more. Key points include.... relationships need communication, respect, honesty, and fidelity. Men who hit women have a psychological problem and, really, a husband should not hit a wife because he is not her father, he is her husband. Same goes for the wife. She cannot beat her husband because she is not his mother, but his wife.... (it's okay for parents to hit their kids...). Fidelity was a big point, since so many Nican men have queridas. Also, she preached about how she never ... read more

From San Fransisco Libre we managed to bypass changing buses in Managua - the capital of Nicaragua, and a terrifying and traumatic place to change buses! However this did involve us having to board an already over-full chicken bus to Matagalpa, our next destination. This was twice as busy as any of the Guatemalan buses that we had previously claimed to be the busiest buses in the world and entered the Guiness Book of Records for the most people you can fit on a bus..... but it was fun! (...once i'd got a foothold and a handhold and felt confident about hanging onto the outside of the bus and not falling away and onto the tarmac to meet my maker... - Ben) We started off with both of us hanging out the front door (after the ... read more

In the later morning and early afternoon yesterday we were so worried that we had lost the Rancho dog and Rico telling Nate and Stephanie, the owners, that he was sorry that we had lost their boy. Nate (or Nato as he is called in the village) went out in his truck to the area where we last saw him and asked everyone there and no one had seen him. Later Rico and I boarded the 1:30 pm bus to the end of the village, sitting on opposite sides of the bus in case we could see him on his way. We thought that maybe he decided to come back along the road instead of the beach the way we had walked earlier. Once the bus got to the end of the beach everyone got off. ... read more

Okay here are some answers to questions asked in the comment section of various blogs.... Yes, I was getting tired of wedding planning. HOWEVER, now that my parents are arriving in FOUR WEEKS I am into the panic phase of planning. Fortunately, I finally convinced Lenin that having the reception in a restaurant would be a lot easier than trying to organize it in our community. So now we don't have to think about anything for the reception except transportation of people and of the cake. We are planning to take a month or so once we get to the States to relax and take some vacation, which will technically be our honeymoon. So, no, we are not taking a standard honeymoon here in the Nica. Though we arrrre staying at a hotel the night after ... read more
