Yup. Dengue Fever. Awesome. Have to stay in Managua tonight, too. Hopefully can go back to Moropoto tomorrow. Well. Friday things started to go downhill. Our dog, Huesita, died. Lenin and I have had her for over a year and it was not a pretty death. So that sucks. Then that night a fever hit me.... and it hasn't let up. Saturday Sunday Monday and today, Tuesday. Sunday I woke up with a heat rash all over my body, too. Everyone said it's "calentura" or basically a cold/flu. But that usually is like a 24 hour sort of thing. Not a four day thing. So after getting up today and still feeling like a truck hit me in the middle of the night, I came to Managua. I got here late in the afternoon so had ... read more

Never go with strangers. That's what we all learn when we're young. But as we get older (and supposedly wiser with our increased ability to judge and measure people) we create our own exceptions to that rule. After all the travel I had done over the past 10 years, I had never experienced a serious incident. This was about to change... As I traveled from Honduras to Nicaragua and spent a somewhat uninspiring day at the capital Managua, I made my way to the old colonial town of Leon, which has some interesting old buildings and a huge cathedral. The next day, I was traveling on to Granada. On my way on a minibus to Managua, where I had to switch to another bus to Granada, a local guy started chatting with me. He was young, ... read more

We were excited to visit San Francisco Libre, the Nicaraguan town that is twinned with Reading. It certainly had an air of mystery to it as it is not mentioned in any guide books that we've seen (it is not yet a tourist destination by any means), and internet searches reveal little other than the twinning links and statistical information. Due to the twinning links we were able to really scratch the surface of this Nicaraguan town in a way that would be near impossible in any of the tourist towns, such as Granada, without a lengthy stay. We arrived mid to late afternoon after a few bus rides, including a short wait in the dingy highway town of San Benito and an hour or so of the San Francisco Libre chicken bus picking it's way ... read more

Ha pasado mucho tiempo! Well, I am back in Nicaragua, no surprise there. After a long year of living in Minnesota, my time came to go back to the country I fell in love with. My Rotary district is involved in a 10 year long initiative with the Masaya Rotarians and I received a scholarship to attend the next delegation. With Chile out the window, another opportunity came by! I spent close to 12 hours in 3 different airports and airplanes combined, just to get the cheap ticket. It was a long, lazy day, but well worth it for the price. My plane mate happened to be a Scottish who spent half his life in Nicaragua. He gave me a complete history of Nicaragua's torn past. I spotted Pharaoh Casino from the plane and saw all the ... read more

Okay, so I brought the camera to document my stitches being taken out, buuut I forgot the cable to connect my camera, so the photos will have to wait. That´s about it. Went to see Iron Man 2 again with a bud since he hadn´t seen it. I will get a pedicure tomorrow before I head home. Have a meeting Friday that I am still trying to decide if I need to go or not. We shall see. It would be in Ocotal. I think I might have to pass on this one. I have made so many trips to Managua this month and we need to head to Esteli to buy fabric for shirts for the groomsmen and see about dresses for bridesmaids. There is still so much to do.... read more

Thanks to printing and reading our online mag, for which I am the Travel & Leisure Editor, I read our IT's Tech Guide and downloaded free antivirus software, Panda Cloud Antivirus.... and it is finding allllllllll kinds of things in my computer. Which isn't surprising, but nontheless, worms in my legs, worms in my computer... it's a little much, don't you think? I am planning on taking the 9:30 expresso to Somoto tomorrow, which gets me in, hopefully, in time for the afternoon bus. Or I might take the later bus, who knows. I'm not thrilled about going back tomorrow, not gonna lie. I like hot showers and air conditioning and crisp sheets. Especially when I'm sick. Or when there's a greater chance of infecting my wound in a ... read more

9:30 PM Omg our 2nd Boss in PC Nica just took our editorial staff out to dinner at an amaaaazing(ly expensive) Italian restaurant, Pane e Vino, and we are all about stuffed and wired at the same time. I had riccotta and spinach ravioli, tiramisu, and coffee and now we are back in the Office, the only 5 crazies who are spending Friday night sitting in front of computers making pages. Reminds me of college and us being cracked out after hours of alternately checking email, snacking, and worrying about meeting deadlines. 10:30 AM Okay, dentist stuff is all done. I can't eat or drink citrus acid filled things for a few weeks and, oh, stop grinding my teeth. Guess that will stop once the wedding is over and my service is done. Now figuring out ... read more

11:30 AM Ugh. Working with a bunch of Editors is frustrating. 3:30 PM Awesome. So, since I am in Managua already, I had PC make a dentist appointment for me since two molars hurt. So I went. And I have no cavaties, but apparently I am grinding my teeth and have created little holes. So now one half of my face is numb, but the holes are filled on my left side. Go again tomorrow morning to fill the right side. She says everything else looks perfect, my bite is good, but for some reason I'm stressed and grinding my teeth at night. Awesome. Bet I can figure out why..... Then, as I was in the taxi on the way back, trying to talk to the taxi driver with half a mouth, my mother calls and ... read more

We Crossed the Nica Border with no problems and started to head towards Isle De Ometepe. We made are way through rivas and stopped for lunch, We bumped into our friend Gary, who we were going to visit on the island, that worked out pretty well. We parked the RV at Hotel California for a few nights ( they had dogs that run the property with a few shotgun guards) and headed towards the ferry. We made are way down the pier, and there was alot of drunk people getting a early start for Semana Santa. the 1 hour ferry right was very pretty. The locals have been a bit nervous over the volcano for the past few weeks being that it is still active. Before we arrived a couple weeks earlier the volcano was spewing ... read more

I last left you all stranded in San Jose with an itchy crotch, a vile demeanour, and in desperate need of fresh underpants... my friend Jackie suggested I keep my soiled socks for the return flight when I can pull them out in mid-flight and have my very own terrorist extravaganza... JIHAD! I spent my purgatory in San Jose with a charming French biologist named Isabelle and we partook in eating various delicious local dishes, sampling some of the best espressos I have ever had, and drinking as many Costa Rican beers my exhausted body could handle. It’s funny how food and drinks taste sooo much better on vacation! My bus to Managua, Nicaragua was leaving at 3 am and I still had no luggage... around 11pm my backpack arrived at the guesthouse with a thump ... read more
