"What we have once enjoyed we can never lose. All that we love deeply becomes a part of us."-Helen Keller
I read this in a tourism magazine during my trip back from Antigua today. My parents had been here since Tuesday, and we stayed in Antigua last night for them to catch a shuttle to the airport. This quote really resonated with me following their visit in my beloved Guatemala 😊 I am so thankful that my family, my home, my friends, AU, and Sharon are a part of me. Being with mom and dad for a week(ish) was a great reminder of how blessed I have been to be shaped by some incredible people, to be raised by my wonderful parents. Also, being in Guatemala, I was thinking about how exciting it is that this place, this culture, and my new, extended family here are becoming a part of me that I can never lose. Sharing Guatemala with my parents was so much fun. After a pretty long day of travel because of some road blockages from protests, we made it to Xela. They got to see where I live, meet my host family, meet my friends, go to
Caras Alegres, and eat dinner with Gris. I'm so glad that they got to see my life here!
After Xela, we stayed one night at Lake Atitlan and one night in Antigua. It was a great break, and we stayed in some beautiful places. We relaxed and enjoyed the beauty of Guatemala together. I am SO SO GLAD THEY CAME! They can understand my life here so much more now.
On my way back from Antigua, I stopped in at Parramos to visit the Rodriguez family. The baby and Nirma are still in the hospital, but the doctor thinks they are ready to come home. This is so exciting as the kids are out of school now and will ahve to spend the next 2 weeks with their grandparents since there is no one to watch them. The difficult part is that they will have to start buying the special milk for the baby without the financial support of the hospital. Please be praying for their family as they figure out how to pay these added expenses.
The kids of Caras Alegres are also out of school as of Friday for their 3 month break. The structure
of Caras changes a little bit to be a bit more structured now that the kids are out of school. We also have some fun activities coming up-including a camping trip! I'm excited that I will get to be a part of these activities.
As I settle back into my life and routine here in Xela, I am praying that these people, this culture continues to become part of who I am as I learn to live more simply and more intentionally in service of others. I am also praying that my experiences at home and the love of God continues to shape the people and this country around me as well. Thank you for all the love and support from home-the gifts and messages from home that my parents brought were so uplifting!
Love!
