Today we did our three countries in one day routine. The bus ride was lovely and uneventful. We started in Mexico, made a quick stop in Belize, and ended up back at the place we enjoy in Guatamala. A village called El Remate, which we are adopting. We are going to send them school supplies when we get back. Tomorrow we leave for a new leg of our adventure. We fly to Guat. city, and then public transport of some sort to Panajachel. Which I will learn to spell before too long. The pictures I am sending are of mysterious ruins, mysterious plants, and Harold in Chetumal. Take care all. ... read more

Harold in Chetumal Mexico

Today we caught a local minivan by standing at the side of the street. We felt very 'local' doing that. (but we found out later they charged us more than the locals.) Then we had fun poking about a cute little town called Flores. We took a tuk tuk cab (a three wheeled vehicle) It held three grown ups besides the driver and one youth on his way to school who befriended us on the bus and made sure we got to where we were going. We ate at a restaurant that was recommended to us by our guide on the ruins trips which served traditional and local fare. One of the side dishes was a cooked cactus which was very good, and a local kind of squash. Tomorrow we leave to head north. ... read more
Another sunset shot

Today is our last day at this place where we have free internet access. Tomorrow we leave for a long bus ride to Chetumal. Yesterday we hired a private guide who we met at Tikal for a tour of a lesser known but also important ruin. This ruin is even older than Tikal. Since it is smaller, it was easier to see the layout and be awed by the wonder of it all. We scampered up a pyramid, and around ruins, and climbed up a temple to watch the sunset. Tomorrow a l o n g bus ride. ... read more

Hei folkens, her kommer nok et lysglimt i deres gjennsn0dde hverdag.

My God, I cant believe how beautiful the ruins area! We are in Tikal, the largest city of the Mayans. The temples we have been climbing are hundreds of feet in the air, with often steep stairs leading up, almost like climbing a ladder. These people lived a thousand years ago, sacrificed people to the Gods, buried their kings in tombs, and we are walking through their cities! Most people will never see these temples in person and its impossible for words to give them justice. I am going to come back to the states with a new found appreciation for hot and clean water, a dry bed, being able to eat without gettting travellers diarhea, air conditioning, and my awesome family and friends. This trip has been a blessing in disguise, and I truly appreciate ... read more

Puff, pant! damn, finally at the top of a set of 80m high near vertical, dodgy wooden stairs. As we reach the top of the temple we emerge out of the top of the jungle shrouded in mist. We sit on the top step of this huge, really old temple as the mist rolls out and the sun reveals the tops of temple 1 & 2 and k's & k's of the canopy of the guatemalan jungle. A truely amazing experience. The journey from Mex-Guat was a bit of a painful experience. We'd booked a package to flores Guat and they started off by shifting us between 3 vans and wanted to split us up with our luggage, hell no! Then we had a few hrs in a tiny boat along the river then a really ... read more

Temple 1

We are staying on the coolest island called Flores, where we have internet access, great food, and air conditioning. Today we took a small boat to an unexcevated mayan ruin, meaning that there is a temple that has not been dug up yet, who knows what kind of treasures are there. We also went to an amazing wildlife preserve with monkeys, talking parrots, alligators, and wildcats. We are headed to Tikal tomorrow, the Rome of the Mayan world. Make sure you check out my photos on facebook. ... read more
