Danger, danger and more danger!! Before taking off on my Central American journey- this was what I thought of whenever someone mentioned El Salvador. Perhaps it had something to do with my father showing me videotapes of drug lords and gang kidnappings in the tiny Central American country and begging me "please, please whatever you do please do not visit El Salvador" over and over again or the countless other travelers telling stories about how crazy they "heard" the country was. In the end I decided to go to El Salvador based on many recommendations from other travelers WHO HAD ACTUALLY BEEN TO THE COUNTRY and spoke very highly of the Salvadoran people. In a place that sees very few tourists due to this so called "danger factor" glorified by the media and the proximity of ... read more

"Suchitoto is widely known throughout El Salvador for its Church and for its cobblestone roads. Suchitoto is one of the few areas in El Salvador were there are still cobblestone roads. It has an excellent view of the Suchitlán lake, which is an artificial lake formed in the Lempa river and the Cerrón Grande dam. It is a very popular weekend destination for Salvadoreans. It has a broad cultural activities, such as: gallery arts, cultural centers and handcrafts." from Wikipedia. I had no idea we were going to stop here. It does not seem that there are real cobbles ( hand hewen stone) forming the streets but rather smooth stones placed to form a somewhat flat surface. We left Cecilia's Yard in good time and arrived at Suchitoto early in the afternoon. The cook group was ... read more

El Imposible, La Libertad and Cecilia's Yard Since I passed thru the area in the dead of night with lightning only occasionally … every five minutes …illuminating the whole sky it is best to read an authoritative source concerning the existence of this place. In Park Net .... nps.gov/centralamerica/Salvador.... the following description of El Imposible can be found; “EL SALVADOR Welcome to El Imposible National Park! A combination of unique flora and fauna, archaeological remains, and truly spectacular scenery will allow you to enjoy one of the last remaining tropical rainforests in El Salvador. Of the few natural areas in the country, El Imposible has the most species of plants and animals. The jaguar, harpy eagle and scarlet macaw are already extinct in El Salvador, and countless other species are endangered. Some impressive creatures, such as ... read more

Weekend in El Salvador Central America Caribbean » El Salvador By Sallys TravelsJuly 22nd 2007Sally Hickson This weekend I ventured out of Guatemala down to El Salvador for another beach! I went with another volunteer called Elizabeth (see photo). We left Antigua at 1pm and arrived in Tunco Beach, El Salvador at 5.30pm. The beach is mainly a surfing beach and the place is teeming with buff bodies and surfer dudes. Great for the ladies!! Sorry Guys.... We spent the weekend by the beach and I basically spent the whole of Saturday going in and out of the water, which was really warm and great for catching waves in. Unfortunately the weather wasn´t quite as good as ... read more

********THIS IS MY VERY FIRST ENTRY THAT I COULDN´T SAVE BEFORE FOR WHATEVER REASON....SO SOME OF THE STUFF IS REPEATED IN THE NEXT ONE!!******** Wow, I don´t even know where to start. Really. One day, and I have incredible stories. To begin with though-I haven´t figured out this Peruvian keyboard yet, and as usual, I´m in a rush...so excuse all the mistakes por favor. And there will be many. So, thanks to Brookie and Steve, I got from Chicago to LA without a hitch....LA was a little confusing. Huge airport. I started speaking Spanish in LA....South American airline. Left English behind awhile ago, and my head is aching. Getting to El Salvador was cool-flew over lots of jungle and volcanoes. The airport is close to the ocean....looks a lot like Iowa. Flat, agriculture...except more tropical with ... read more

So all good things come to an end..and my time abroad is coming to that. I am spending 8 hours on a layover in San Salvador in El Salvador..not too much fun as the city is too far..and the beach too...so a day of reading...and eating. I spend tonight in Toronto.and am home for the Easter weekend! The past week was really hard. Totally bittersweet as my host family is crazy and I went from sharing a room with the little brother and sister to sharing with 6 more family members from Tegicugalpa, another city in Honduras. Needless to stay I look forward to not sharing a single bed with a random family member..or eating solely fried chicken or rice beans and tortillas..lol The sunshine..kids..and coworkers were really hard to leave. I am a sun baby..and ... read more

Since the last installment, we have travelled through Belize, Honduras, El Salvador, and Nicaragua. God we've done a lot! I guess after relaxing for 2 weeks on Lago de Atitlan, we needed to do fit a little craziness into the itinerary. In Belize we visited Placencia and Punta Gorda. Placencia was OK and it had a nice white sand beach, but it was cloudy and it rained for the two days we were there. Our hostel had rats too. And, I got cayenne pepper on "a sensitive area".... I blame Placencia. Punta Gorda was pretty sweet. It is a really chill place filled with Garifuna dudes (they are decendents of black slaves, speak creole english and many of them are rasta). One night, Aden and I (Morgan was tired or some lame thing) went out to ... read more

Central America Caribbean » El Salvador » Western » El Zonte February 20th 2007

My crazy family subscribes to the notion that salt water heals all, so naturally I headed directly for the ocean and stayed for a week. El Salvador’s coastlines certainly don’t receive the hype, which Costa Rica’s coasts do, so you get to a ponte like El Zonte and it’s just the fisherman, their families, the ocean, and you! Falling asleep (with only 4 walls separating you from the ocean) to the crashing of waves on the shoreline of your front yard, under a sky glowing with stars, and then bathing in the ocean with the rise of the sun every morning- a que rico! The family that I stayed with went diving for lobster and fish everyday, so I hiked along the cliffs of the shore by day, ate fresh fish every afternoon, and read until ... read more

2-hour bus ride south of Tacuba… Juayua is a cute, colorful, coffee-growing town. Cute to the point where the trees which line the street grids have been sculptured in the shape of blocks and balloons and the building rows behind them each are perfectly painted in bright, happy colors, accented with flowers. A popular weekend spot for Salvadorians, Sundays, the parque central fills with local restaurants serving their cuisine from vendors in the street. Oversized, double-decker buses, dwarfing the town center, wait to take (Salvadorian) tourists on a “rockin’” night ride through…hmmn, not so sure, felt too much of a carnival for me. I came to this town for the trek through jungle and swim under the waterfalls and caves. Precisely what I did. Once again, another adventurous hike, carving our way through the jungle, half ... read more
