Hehe.. . had to get them Athlete lyrics in there... We did actually know why we were going to El Salvador and what for - Claire was pretty much whacked out following her Shamanic training, and we decided a couple of weeks by the coast was the order of the day before continuing our journeys through the rest of Central America. After finding a fabulous retreat in the pages of the trusty local Revue Mag we headed out of Antigua by coach and slipped across the border into El Salvadors capital - San Salvador. Having read many scare stories of tourists being held at gun point by local bandits, violence, crime and its general lack of tourist infrastructure, I must say how unexpectedly clean, tidy and prosperous this city appears with gleaming glass tower blocks and ... read more

We breezed through the border from mild but stormy Guatemala to sweaty El Salvadorian border of Central America, I questioned why the coach driver didn’t take all our bags off at Guatemalan customs and the customs officer didn’t stamp either passport upon exit, nor did they ask for any immigration tax. The bus started to drive away without us on board; we had to run after it through no man’s land shouting WAIT!!!! At the El Salvador border people got off the bus just to pee against the same bus including two people that had obviously come from Antigua with their legs in plaster using the aid of crotches, damn those streets. On board an immigration officer finally stormed through the aisles checking passports. She inquisitively looked at our passports for a long time. She pointed ... read more

El Imposible, La Libertad and Cecilia's Yard Since I passed thru the area in the dead of night with lightning only occasionally … every five minutes …illuminating the whole sky it is best to read an authoritative source concerning the existence of this place. In Park Net .... nps.gov/centralamerica/Salvador.... the following description of El Imposible can be found; “EL SALVADOR Welcome to El Imposible National Park! A combination of unique flora and fauna, archaeological remains, and truly spectacular scenery will allow you to enjoy one of the last remaining tropical rainforests in El Salvador. Of the few natural areas in the country, El Imposible has the most species of plants and animals. The jaguar, harpy eagle and scarlet macaw are already extinct in El Salvador, and countless other species are endangered. Some impressive creatures, such as ... read more

Since the last installment, we have travelled through Belize, Honduras, El Salvador, and Nicaragua. God we've done a lot! I guess after relaxing for 2 weeks on Lago de Atitlan, we needed to do fit a little craziness into the itinerary. In Belize we visited Placencia and Punta Gorda. Placencia was OK and it had a nice white sand beach, but it was cloudy and it rained for the two days we were there. Our hostel had rats too. And, I got cayenne pepper on "a sensitive area".... I blame Placencia. Punta Gorda was pretty sweet. It is a really chill place filled with Garifuna dudes (they are decendents of black slaves, speak creole english and many of them are rasta). One night, Aden and I (Morgan was tired or some lame thing) went out to ... read more

My crazy family subscribes to the notion that salt water heals all, so naturally I headed directly for the ocean and stayed for a week. El Salvador’s coastlines certainly don’t receive the hype, which Costa Rica’s coasts do, so you get to a ponte like El Zonte and it’s just the fisherman, their families, the ocean, and you! Falling asleep (with only 4 walls separating you from the ocean) to the crashing of waves on the shoreline of your front yard, under a sky glowing with stars, and then bathing in the ocean with the rise of the sun every morning- a que rico! The family that I stayed with went diving for lobster and fish everyday, so I hiked along the cliffs of the shore by day, ate fresh fish every afternoon, and read until ... read more

So, I think the last time I wrote we were in Xela. Didn’t think that much of Xela to be honest, we found it dead boring and were in bed by 10 both nights we were there! Bit weird really cos everyone who we’ve met who have been to Xela said they loved it. Perhaps we just seemed to miss where everything was at, and the fact we were there on a Sunday and Monday night. So, early Monday morning we decided to make our way to El Salvador. The journey was going pretty smoothly until about 2 o’clock in the afternoon when the heavens decided to open. This wouldn’t have been a problem except that or bags were on the roof of the bus, and rucksacks for some reason do not seem to be made ... read more

Day Nine - Wednesday September 27th Wednesday was the day we were going to Tazumal. We woke up early and had breakfast. Then I wanted to make a video that showed the inside of the house, so I made a video tour of Yani's house. It starts in the room that we're staying at and goes throughout the place until the front door and then outside. I say "beautiful" a lot because I wanted Yani's parents to know I was saying good things about their house (and because I really do think it's beautiful). If you click, you will be treated to my verbal explanation of what's going on, as well as my fumbling interaction with Yani's parents. They are TOTAL sweethearts and made such an effort to communicate with me, despite the language barrier. They ... read more

Day Eight - Tuesday September 26th Woke up Tuesday feeling sick. I can't remember if it was a regular headache, or not. I think it was a combination of my antibiotics that I had to keep taking and a headache pill that didn't react well with the meds. Either way, after breakfast and while we were on our way to the mountains, I started feeling like ass. We arrived at a restaurant which was outdoors in a series of gazebos placed along the side of one of the mountains. From there all you could see is green mountains, with thousands of coffee plants growing and lines of trees planted amongst them to prevent erosion of the mountain sides. Yani's dad insisted on taking pictures of me against the backdrop of the mountains and my batteries died ... read more
