After leaving the "wonderful festival city of Suchitoto" it was off to the beach, El Tunco. Nice and sunny, with descent sized waves...too bad there were so many beginners out there (me included), making for dangerous times in the lineup. Sand and sun was blistering hot during the days, with a 10 second time limit on the black sand that wasn´t being cooled by the waves. After relaxing at the beach for a few days and being reunited with the Spanish couple from Suchitoto it was off to Juayua. The day we arrived, the center square was being prepared for the festival. Large tents were being set up around the side streets and the square itself for the food festival that occurs every weekend. Unlike Suchitoto, you could tell there were people getting bused in ... read more

There are people in the word that make a list of everything they want to do before they die. Once they complete an activity, they check it off the list. I don´t do this, but if I did, dancing in a SKA mosh pit at a surf camp party in El Salvador would be checked off the list! Since it is the last weekend that all the roommates would be together we decided to take a trip to the beach in El Salvador. The shuttle picked us up in front of the house at 8:00 am and we were off. The border crossing was easy, no issues - and a couple of hours later we had our first glimpse of the sea. The beach, playa de San Diego was only a 5 minute walk from the ... read more

My first two days of cycling have been punishing to say the least (thankful Shauna isn´t on this ride or I might be single by now :-)). The day started again around 6:00. I was still tired and still not 100% from my food problems from Saturday morning. This was indicative because I took my first nap of the day at the 25km mark! I usually leave the siestas for the heat of the day, but that wouldn´t be the case today. The scenary hadn´t changed much from yesterday. The biggest difference was the level of poverty out in the countryside. Homes made of wood, mud, and corrugated metal seemed to be more of the norm. Another thing that was interesting was that I haven´t seen any Salvadorean flags anywhere or any tourists until La Libertad. ... read more

It is really funny how so many buses terminate at markets. It takes ages for the big beasts to negotiate their way through the crowded market and they spew huge amounts of black exhaust fumes contaminating the fresh produce and choking pedestrians. We encountered this in Ahuachapan, on our way to Juayua. Juayua is on the Ruta de las Flores (Route of the Flowers) and it was quite beautiful getting there. Not so many flowers but probably a little too early in the dry season for those. Lots of coffee plantations. We had a lovely view of Juayua from the main road before we turned off to the town. Juayua had a lovely feeling and when we looked lost a boy on a bike asked if he could help. We were walking in the wrong direction ... read more

At the Terminal Occidente in San Salvador we had our first Pupusas. Cheese stuffed tortillas which were quite delicious. We found the bus to Santa Ana but I had trouble getting on with my backpack. Pieter had to push from behind while the bus driver pulled me up. Arriving at the market in Santa Ana after an uneventful ride we took a US$3 taxi to the Hotel Libertad. We had booked ahead but there were plenty of rooms. We had thought it was US$12 per person but it turned out to be US$12 per room. And they had bell boys who were very nice. Our room was upstairs and from the end of the internal balcony you could see the cathedral. The stairs leading up to the balcony were worn and wooden and moved to an ... read more

After breakfast in the same deserted restaurant we decide we need to change beach plans. We get the 10.30 chicken bus to La Libertad and accept the first place we find. Perhaps because it is backpacker luxury! 2 double beds, own bathroom, table and chairs, arm chairs, fridge, TV and air con, for $20 the room!!!!!! We get straight to the cash machine and then the supermarket. Finally some healthy eating and cereal for breakfast. Not much beach time left so we try the closest one, all rocks, for surfers only. So we get the bus to El Tunco. We struggle to find the beach from the road and get directions from a small child, these lead us to a lagoon made by the sea, but we are trapped from getting to the main beach. We ... read more

A tough day, ad-hoc travelling.... Up at 6 and just time for a street breakfast before the 7am bus to Retalhuleu, we are only guessing this is the place to go and change bus, seems right on the map... We arrive about 9 and are quickly helped onto another bus to Escuintla at 9.30. The progress is great! The second bus is quite luxurious as it has real seats and not American school bus style where they cram as many people as possible per bench. We are just relaxing into our seats, and realise we are lucky to be girls. A young bloke is moved from his window seat so that a couple and two children can take both seats, just as he gets comfy, he´s moved again to allow a young woman to sit down ... read more
