27th - 29th November It was a long old day of chicken bus after chicken bus to get us from Guatamala to El Salvador, but rewarding none the less. A bus to Guatamala City, a taxi to the main station, a bus to just past the border, a collectivo mini bus to another bus station, a bus along the 'Ruta de las Flores' (a slight detour and completely lacking in any evidence of the beautiful flowers it is famed for), another bus and 11 hours later... we arrived at Playa El Tunco. Playa El Tunco is famed for its 'great breaks' (aka surfing), and thus pretty much all the rooms had been taken. Eventually, after being turned away by at least 3 places and exhausting the Lonely Planet's suggestions, we found a rather shabby looking place ... read more

Sunday was our last day in El Salvador. Tim, Katie and I were the first to hit the road at 4 a.m. We were up and ready to go by 3:15, but should have known that meant 4 a.m. El Salvador time! ;) Luckily, our travel day was uneventful. The three of us fly to Houston, then Detroit together. We split up around 6:30 when Tim and I had to head for our gate and flight back to Appleton. We landed safely and were on our way home by 8 with our families. Katie was due in Minneapolis around 11 p.m. and also got home safely. So far only Natalie has updated the team by email, so I know she made it back to PA. When I hear from others, I'll update this post. The majority ... read more

We arrived at the Pacific Ocean last night before dinner. It’s pure paradise here. This morning, we strolled the empty beach and collected sand dollars. We enjoyed time together relaxing on the beach and the pool. Each of us stretched our boundaries, growing as individuals and as a cohesive team during our time in El Salvador. What an idyllic way to end our journey. ... read more

Hello again. As the title of this here entry suggests, I decided that being as I´m in a country where surfing is pretty much the main tourist attraction, I´d give it a try. It might have given you a false impression of my ability though. Sorry about that, but I´ll get there in a bit. I did a bit more in El Salvador before I got to the beach, and I like to tell you about things in a nice chronological order. Santa Ana So when I left you last, I was in Chiquimula, Guatemala, not entirely sure whether I was going to go to Honduras or El Salvador. As you´ve guessed, I chose the latter, and headed for Santa Ana, reputedly a really nice colonial city. All lies. I really didn´t like the place at ... read more

There are people in the word that make a list of everything they want to do before they die. Once they complete an activity, they check it off the list. I don´t do this, but if I did, dancing in a SKA mosh pit at a surf camp party in El Salvador would be checked off the list! Since it is the last weekend that all the roommates would be together we decided to take a trip to the beach in El Salvador. The shuttle picked us up in front of the house at 8:00 am and we were off. The border crossing was easy, no issues - and a couple of hours later we had our first glimpse of the sea. The beach, playa de San Diego was only a 5 minute walk from the ... read more

My first two days of cycling have been punishing to say the least (thankful Shauna isn´t on this ride or I might be single by now :-)). The day started again around 6:00. I was still tired and still not 100% from my food problems from Saturday morning. This was indicative because I took my first nap of the day at the 25km mark! I usually leave the siestas for the heat of the day, but that wouldn´t be the case today. The scenary hadn´t changed much from yesterday. The biggest difference was the level of poverty out in the countryside. Homes made of wood, mud, and corrugated metal seemed to be more of the norm. Another thing that was interesting was that I haven´t seen any Salvadorean flags anywhere or any tourists until La Libertad. ... read more

The beautiful coastline of El Salvador.
Not bad for lunch! This was only $8.

After breakfast in the same deserted restaurant we decide we need to change beach plans. We get the 10.30 chicken bus to La Libertad and accept the first place we find. Perhaps because it is backpacker luxury! 2 double beds, own bathroom, table and chairs, arm chairs, fridge, TV and air con, for $20 the room!!!!!! We get straight to the cash machine and then the supermarket. Finally some healthy eating and cereal for breakfast. Not much beach time left so we try the closest one, all rocks, for surfers only. So we get the bus to El Tunco. We struggle to find the beach from the road and get directions from a small child, these lead us to a lagoon made by the sea, but we are trapped from getting to the main beach. We ... read more

Hehe.. . had to get them Athlete lyrics in there... We did actually know why we were going to El Salvador and what for - Claire was pretty much whacked out following her Shamanic training, and we decided a couple of weeks by the coast was the order of the day before continuing our journeys through the rest of Central America. After finding a fabulous retreat in the pages of the trusty local Revue Mag we headed out of Antigua by coach and slipped across the border into El Salvadors capital - San Salvador. Having read many scare stories of tourists being held at gun point by local bandits, violence, crime and its general lack of tourist infrastructure, I must say how unexpectedly clean, tidy and prosperous this city appears with gleaming glass tower blocks and ... read more

We breezed through the border from mild but stormy Guatemala to sweaty El Salvadorian border of Central America, I questioned why the coach driver didn’t take all our bags off at Guatemalan customs and the customs officer didn’t stamp either passport upon exit, nor did they ask for any immigration tax. The bus started to drive away without us on board; we had to run after it through no man’s land shouting WAIT!!!! At the El Salvador border people got off the bus just to pee against the same bus including two people that had obviously come from Antigua with their legs in plaster using the aid of crotches, damn those streets. On board an immigration officer finally stormed through the aisles checking passports. She inquisitively looked at our passports for a long time. She pointed ... read more
