At 7:30 in the morning on Thursday, we looked out of our cabin window to find Carnival Paradise gliding past Fortaleza de San Carlos de la Cabaña. The fortifications looming above the ship indicated we had entered Havana harbour! Cuba! It had been difficult for Americans to visit here since the imposition of the embargo in 1961. Statue of Cuban national hero José Martí (1853-1895) in Parque Central. José Martí was the symbol of Cuba's movement for independence against Spain in the late 19th century, and is referred to as the "Apostle of Cuban Independence". "... Antonio Maceo

Castillo de Los Tres Reyes del Morro

Castillo de Los Tres Reyes del Morro (Morro Castle) at the entrance to Havana Harbour. At the tip is Faro del Morro lighthouse, built in 1844. On the opposite side of the channel is the more imposing Morro Castle (Castillo del Morro), which was constructed in 1597 and is partly hewn out of the living rock. Barrio Casablanca

View across the Canal de Entrada (Entrance Channel) towards Barrio Casablanca. A Havana Bay cross-channel ferry (launchita) leaves the Casablanca pier. In Casblanca are the Castillo de San Carlos de la Cabaña, Cristo de La Habana and the Hershey Train. The domed building is the National Observatory. DSC_0017p1

Exhibición Militar

Museo Historico Militar - Exhibición Militar. The open air exhibit of aircraft, missiles and other weapons is adjacent to Fortaleza de San Carlos de la Cabaña. This missile in the background is probably a Russian (Soviet) S-75 Dvina and V-750V 1D anti-aircraft missile. DSC_0272p1

La Cabaña de Che Guevara. El Che lived here when he was in charge of trials of Batista supporters at Fortaleza de San Carlos de la Cabaña. It is now a cultural centre. DSC_0279
