At 7:30 in the morning on Thursday, we looked out of our cabin window to find Carnival Paradise gliding past Fortaleza de San Carlos de la Cabaña. The fortifications looming above the ship indicated we had entered Havana harbour! Cuba! It had been difficult for Americans to visit here since the imposition of the embargo in 1961. Hotel Nacional de Cuba. Built in 1930. Designed by McKim, Mead and White in Mediterranean Revival style. The design was influenced by The Breakers Hotel in Palm Beach, Florida. Nationalized in 1960. Calle 21 y O. DSC_0090

Hotel Capri. Opened in 1957 and once owned by Santo Traficante, Jr. Nationalized in 1960. Renovated in 2014. In operation as Hotel NH Capri La Habana. Calle 21 entre Calle N y O. IMG_6746

Salón Rojo

Salón Rojo at Hotel NH Capri. Once the Casino of Hotel Capri. "The Salón Rojo was re-opened in 2003 and now has a variety of events including comedy, disco and a variety of Cuban bands which generally play from 1-2am". IMG_6723

Hotel Manhattan

Hotel Manhattan. Designed and built by Purdy and Henderson, Engineers, in 1910. It is a pastel colored apartment house today. The curved balcony wrapping around a corner is interesting. Calle N y San Lázaro. DSC_0117p1

Ruined House

Ruins of a house in Calle San Lázaro. Despite their appearances, such dwellings are occupied, sometimes with a makeshift addition to the front. Building materials, including concrete, are in short supply in Cuba, limiting restoration that can take place. A "Zapateria" sign in front indicates a shoe store is operated within. DSC_0120p1

Universidad de La Habana

Statue of Alma Mater at Universidad de La Habana. Cast by Czech sculptor Mario Korbel in 1919. The statue sits atop the 88 step La Escalinata at the entrance to the university. DSC_0121p1

Monumento a José Martí

Plaza de la Revolución, Monumento a José Martí - José Martí Memorial. Planned in 1939 and built in 1953-1958 under the Batistia regime. It predates the Cuban Revolution of 1959. The 358 foot (109 m) tower is in the shape of a five pointed star. An observation deck is at the top and a museum at the bottom. José Martí was the symbol of Cuba's movement for independence against Spain in the late 19th century, and is referred to as the "Apostle of Cuban Independence". IMG_6752p1
