At 7:30 in the morning on Thursday, we looked out of our cabin window to find Carnival Paradise gliding past Fortaleza de San Carlos de la Cabaña. The fortifications looming above the ship indicated we had entered Havana harbour! Cuba! It had been difficult for Americans to visit here since the imposition of the embargo in 1961. Ruins of a house in Calle San Lázaro. Despite their appearances, such dwellings are occupied, sometimes with a makeshift addition to the front. Building materials, including concrete, are in short supply in Cuba, limiting restoration that can take place. A "Zapateria" sign in front indicates a shoe store is operated within. DSC_0120p1

Plaza de la Revolución, Monumento a José Martí - José Martí Memorial. Planned in 1939 and built in 1953-1958 under the Batistia regime. It predates the Cuban Revolution of 1959. The 358 foot (109 m) tower is in the shape of a five pointed star. An observation deck is at the top and a museum at the bottom. José Martí was the symbol of Cuba's movement for independence against Spain in the late 19th century, and is referred to as the "Apostle of Cuban Independence". IMG_6752p1
