Bagelmen's
The orange juice from concentrate was a big disappointment. We've come to expect fresher. Geo: 9.92, -84.15
Our last day began with some slightly squished muffins from the Auto Mercado in San Jose that we bought yesterday. Actually, the 3 chocolate chip muffins were in good shape, but they seemed to have given the one blueberry muffin quite a beat down in the pastry bag.
Mom did a little reading about the area of San Jose that we are in. Apparently it is known as the Beverly Hills of Costa Rica. Well, I don't think Beverly Hills needs to be too worried about losing its status to Escazu. It's a bit cleaner, has a few nicer shops and restaurants and is home to the Country Club of Costa Rica, but it's not exactly dressed to impress. Still, it's our last day and we wanted to get out and see what luck would throw our way.
We started walking with a the tentative plan of heading toward Bagelmen's. It was marked on the map and seemed like as good a waypoint as any. As we rounded the corner by Outback Steakhouse Alex noticed a little animal under a tree: a coati. He looks quite a bit like a raccoon, including the ringed tail and the fact that he and

From behind our window we could hear the sweet, melodious whistles of Josh and Alex playing down by the pool. So much for quiet. his family/friends were dumpster diving. When we stopped and really looked there were at least 8 of them. A little one came close enough to get a decent picture with Mom's iPhone.
We made our way around the mall and past at least one heavily guarded gated community. We've read that American expats favor this area. The guards, high fences and the comparatively large number of joggers seem to bear out the truth of this. Just past the Embassy of Holland we found Bagelmen's and stopped in for two bagels and two OJs which set us back about $10. Kate announced that she was not feeling well. Mom decided to press on a little farther to see if it got any better with bagel applied.
Most of our walk was uphill. We moved through a nicer neighborhood and then into what seemed to be the central part of Escazu: it had the school, the church and a park. Kate was looking pretty green so we got into the taxi line with the older folks who had just gotten out of mass and were looking for a ride home. We were back at the hotel by about 11:45 without much to show

This was not on the side of a restaurant, so we were not sure of its significance, but it seems to indicate that the moon and stars like burgers. for our efforts. We did pick up 4 sandwiches for tomorrow's trip. From what we understand there is not much time to get food in Houston and the second flight of the day offers nothing in the way of refreshment.
When we got back to the room Kate wanted to sleep and the boys wanted to play their flutes. Mom sent them down to the pool. Since no one was using it we figured they wouldn't bother too many people there. A few minutes after they left we could hear flute music coming from outside the window. Sure enough, we hadn't realized it but the pool is two flights down and just a little to the left of our window. The boys were jammin'.
