Today we are going to be totally lazy! We got up late and made pancakes for breakfast.
We have no plans for today at all except to have dinner with our friends Butch and Margarita at 6:30 at their house down in Santiago. Other than that we are going to lay around and have a nice quiet day...read, write, listen to the birds.
Good plan for about 30 minutes! Alberto, the owner of the casita (we are subletting from Kyle and Diane) has come to do some work. The rainy season is just around the corner so Alberto takes all of the downspouts down, washes them out, washes debris off the roof and rakes up around the house, and then sprays out the gutters and rehangs the downspouts. He worked for 6 hours! I was trying to relax in the hammock but when he started spraying the roof I came in. Eventually he finished and it was quiet once again.
We have about 2 hours before leaving for dinner; time to shower and change clothes. The temperature has dropped a lot and it is windy out so we both opt for blue jeans but still short sleeved shirts. When we leave the house the fog has rolled in. Driving to Butch and Margarita's house was a nightmare. We could hardly see the front of the car - forget about seeing the road!
We know how to get to their street but what we didn't know was how far up the rocky road their gate would be. I was to call Butch when we made our final turn so he could come down and open the gate, but every time I dialed, I got a pleasant recording saying, "Sorry but this number is invalid". At least I think that's what it was saying.
We knew we had driven past the gate started making a U-turn on a road that was about 1/2 of a lane, ended up in some soft dirt, car facing the jungle. Yikes! Jeff got the car into 4-wheel and that dug us out.
Back down the road we went, turned around at the bottom and as we drove up, there was Butch. Yippee! He had been trying to call me, he couldn't connect either.
It is so nice to see them again!!! We visited for a while...they are currently renting but are building a house here and we heard of some of their new plans. Things, like construction, move slowly here and it can be frustrating, but they were handling their aggravations with patience and some humor.
Margarita outdid herself with dinner. Our appetizers were yucca and dip, and dinner was pork roast with apples and herbs, steamed vegies, including gemelo (not sure that is correct. It is part of the plantain family and looks like a small chubby banana). She made me spaghetti with mushrooms and spinach and it had a kick to it. Everything was delicious and we had such a great time!
Dinner was so good that none of us had dessert - fresh strawberries and ice cream - it sure sounded yummy though.
We visited for a bit after dinner and wanted to stay longer but both Jeff and I were concerned about getting home through the fog. Well, it was totally clear all the way home. What a relief.
Tomorrow, Annie is going to take us sightseeing. That should be fun. Join us!
