Today is moving day. We are leaving San Ramon for Heredia where we will be staying in a 2-story condo. But first, we are heading down to Butch and Margarita's. Remember that I said looking at an undeveloped lot doesn't do anything for me? Well, I was wrong! The views from their lot are gorgeous! And, the hill behind them is a protected reserve so no one can build there. Their lot is so steep, that even if someone builds in front of them that house would be way down the mountain. The reserve behind them has two types of monkeys and a family of sloths. We don't walk onto their lot but stand on the road. None of us are wearing knee high boots, and there are very poisonous snakes here. The family living down the road just lost their dog to a snake. We had a great time with them and agree to keep in touch.
They drop us off at home. We finish packing, load up the car and go onward for more adventures.
We drive to Heredia to our new abode, meet the caretaker, Felicia, get the keys and drop off our luggage. It is an
easy drive to Heredia and we find the secure, gated community easily - our directions said to turn right immediately after Papa John's (no kidding).
Felicia speaks no English at all but is adept with Google Translator, but we don't get any but basic information. We want to know about the bus routes, where the ex-pats hang out, stuff like that. Guess we'll just have to figure it out.
Now we jump back in the car to drive into Heredia to take a quick look around, trying to orient ourselves in this bustling town. I'm embarrassed to tell you that we get groceries at Walmart but it less than a kilometer from our condo and we want to get groceries while we have the car.
We are staying in a kind of upscale (for CR) gated community. Our condo is two stories and oddly decorated. The furniture is a heavy European style, big upholstered chairs...definately not in keeping with the local airy style. The house itself is a weird mix of Tico/gringo; for example, there is a dishwasher(!) but you don't flush the toilet paper. There is hot water in the kitchen and one bathroom, but not the other. Some of the
windows have screens, some don't. It is as though the owner couldn't decide what to do.
It is certainly a nice place with lots amenities, like a bathtub, and a washer and dryer out back on the patio, but honestly it is a let-down from San Ramon. Our back view is a very small yard and a concrete wall. I can see the shower head in the bathroom of the condo above us; out the front door there is the street and other condos facing us. Though the buildings are all constructed of concrete with thick walls you can hear everything because everyone ...including us has their doors and windows open.
Well, we did want a variety of locales and experiences so this is the right place for us now. We won't be enjoying the sounds of cicadas at night or the birds during the day because we are directly in the flight path of the San Jose airport!
Let's see what tomorrow brings...
