Hi all:
Hope you are well :-)) Thanks for my lovely emails.
All good here - today is my last day in Escazu which I feel quite sad about. I can't believe how quickly the last 3 weeks here have gone. I've loved it and have made lots of new friends. Had to say goodbye to everyone yesterday which was quite emotional - especially the kids, made me cry! I took Naomi and Emma to work with me to the kid's soup kitchen on Monday and they loved it. We have decided to do some fund raising when we get back to try and get them a decent kitchen. The one they have is filthy, the ceiling is full of holes so if it rains there are leaks galore. So I'm hoping if we organise a big party you will all come and drink lots (not that most of you need much persuasion for that!) and buy raffle tickets. Any handsome men, up for autioning yourselves off to a sugar mummy...!
We had a fantastic weekend travelling around. We went to Tortuguero on Friday morning which is quite a long way away. Took about 5 hours - 3 buses and a
boat to get there. It's really cool and has a great vibe. It's surrounded by secondary rain forest and there is a beautiful beach. We turned up and went for dins in this amazing bar that looks over the river. We spent hours there playing cards and enjoying the view and beer. Then we did a night tour to see the turtles which was fantastic! To see 250 lb turtles, 2 metres long hauling themselves up the beach and giving birth to 120 eggs it truly quite spectacular. We were lucky enough to see the full cycle too. We saw two coming in from the water (they come all the way back to where they were born to give birth to their bubs), one actually laying her eggs and one heading back to the water, knackered I should imagine after that ordeal. Was brilliant and even Naomi who isn't much of a wildlife fan loved it. We got to bed about 12 and then got up at 5am to do a boat tour through the rainforest. When we turned up and saw the canoe we were slightly dubious - it looked older than Jesus, plus we'd seen a croc on
the water taxi the day before so we didn't feel the safest! Then, Naomi got in and kept moving around almost capsizing it and putting th efear of god into the two litlle, meek German gilrs sat in the back who were almost croc food! Was well worth it though as we got so much closer to wildlife than those with engines. We were so lucky, we say a sloth, lots of parrots, toucans, tropical birds, Iguanas, a Jesus Christ lizard (the ones that run on water - even saw a baby one running!), spider monkeys playing in the trees and a howler monkey and loads more! We kept seeing logs and thinking they were crocs - your mind plays games when your hanging out of crappy little canoe! I saw one that particularly resembled a croc of some sort but the guide kept saying it wasn't. he was getting nearer and nearer to it and we said, "are you sure, it looks like it's got eyes!" and it turned out it was a blooming caimen! We were inches away from it, could have patted it on the head (if we were feeling suicidal Hed lied as he probably knew
wed start schreeching and rock the boat over if we knew what we heading towards!
That arvo we then headed off to the Arenal volcano. Its so impressive, completely massive! La Fortuna is a really nice town too, although we did feel slightly ripped off. Did a "Lava night" tour which we were really excited about but it worked out to mean us paying to sit in the rain = we could see sweet FA let alone any blooming lave which is probably good as we would have run liek the wind if it started erupting! Hey ho. The next morning we went to the Baldi hot springs which are lovely. Spent the morning relaxing and testing all the pools,. some 45 degrees celcius! Then back to Escazu, very very tired!
Naomi and Emma are in Jaco now on the Pacific side so Im heading up there soon to meet them for Emmas last couple of days and then Panama here we come!
Best get going, look like a snail with my mahusive rucksack! Love to all, keep in touch xxx
