Aoife in the JungleAoife in the JungleAoife in the Jungle

Hansel & Gretel chic!
Hi!

As you may well know we were lucky enough to spend two fantastic weeks in Costa Rica with Sarah and Aoife. Between spotting wildlife, drinking rum, catching the sun and taking some fabulous boat rides, Aoife somehow managed to write some cracking poems! HereĀ“s a couple of our favourites...

Tortugeuro, by Aoife Mannix

The men in the turtle bar drinking Cuba Libra for breakfast.
Their skin tanned leather broken by Spanish laughter
as the boats are piled higher and higher.
Bananas and tourists squeeze through crocodile waters
where reggae music sways to the balance of the waves.
The casinos promise poker discotheques.
Churchgoers raise their hands to dance
to blaring Jesus music splitting open a night
of neon nativities and giant parrots.
The villagers play pool in a room full of pinball machines,
their tiny lights flashing and zapping
as the rain beats down torrential in its magnificent debauchery.
Turning the one street to a maze of mud
where the children weave their bicycles
and the only access is by water.
Everyone waits for the turtles to begin nesting.
In this lost place on the edge of the rain forest,
glowing with vibrant bird flight
and
Baldi Hot SpringsBaldi Hot SpringsBaldi Hot Springs

Officially the cheesiest place on earth, but where else can you get a great cocktail in a 40 degree volcanic pool?
the passion of giant waves crashing on a desolate beach.
Here the locals know they are only guests
in the jungles of their dreams.

Pura Vida, by Aoife Mannix

The blue heron spikes his punk hairdo,
the iguana sports an orange Mohawk,
here where the waves crash white as snow.
The water turns mercury jade
as the boat inches closer
to crocodile eyes, watching, always watching,
as we slide through this jungle circus.
The vividness of feather trapeze artists
tumbling across the sky,
echoing whoops of fire cries
from some surreal orchestra
as the forest tunes up for breakfast.

We are the freaks in our own freak show,
sharing beer with a leaf disguised as a cricket.
There are no words in the dictionary
for the sheer green of our applause.
I spell your tiger wings with the missing letters
of what I wanted to tell you
about the wonders of turtles.
Reflected happiness, the sky inverted.
All worries only the foolishness of clowns.
The cities of painted faces further away
than we ever believed possible.

On the flip side of my ocean,
there is carved only your footprints
along a beach created for nesting.
Hey, good looking!Hey, good looking!Hey, good looking!

"Wanna get busy? Promise not to eat your head after..."

This long rush to reach the sea,
we have made it at last.
Eggs cracked, a shell for a home.
Runaway to join my exodus,
but come back to the place we were born.

The gasp of sudden flight,
what is hidden in the camouflage.
The wildness of such beauty,
what we never expected.
The pure weirdness of love
swinging from the branches.
A carnival of magical creatures.

Your eyes set to music in the morning
as the sun whispers over the top of the trees
and the rain dances on the water.
Hungry, full of mischief.
The touch of an explorer.
My lips stung parrot red,
your laughter electric.

No relation to the kimodo dragon. Interesting fact, Tortuguero is also home to the "Jesus Christ Lizard", which is able to run on water! This poor guy is only able to make fish sarnies run a long way

One of the few examples close enough to shoot. The rest were all mainly making little turtles!
