Sorry it has been so long since I have blogged. March has been a pretty busy month trying to plan our weekends and spring break, my sister came to visit for a week, and we are getting close to finals. The first weekend in March I went to another beach with some friends for the weekend. One of the beaches we went to, Montezuma, had waterfalls that you could jump off of. It took us awhile to find a path to the waterfalls, but after about 3 hours of going in the wrong direction we finally found it!! It was 45 ft. tall. I jumped off the waterfall at about 40 ft. It was quite the rush but I was definitely sore for a few days!!! It was worth it though after our 3 hour ... read more

Washington DC to San Jose, via Miami Morning travel is not fun Needless to say, I got nary a wink on the day before my travel, so I was already irritable, but when I settled into my seat on the plane, I noticed no fewer than 5 young kids surrounding me. Today was not to be my day. We had a rather peaceful flight for all of 5 minutes before babies #1 and 2 began wailing. Oh wait, I shouldn't say "flight" because we hadn't even pulled back from the gate yet. Lovely. While flying into Miami, all was well. Water in view? Check. Canals in view? check. Glide path smoothly descending? Check. Wheels touching down as expected? Um, not check? Yep, we were advised that while things were always in control, something in the approach ... read more

Alrighty then....I just signed up here, and I hope that I can make it look decent and give friends and family a look at this trip to Costa Rica. I should really document my other worldly travels, maybe when there is more time. So stay tuned, I really hope to have at least a few photos up and some words too for my trip down, DC to Miami, and then Miami to San Jose, Costa Rica. I will be searching for the rum and coke machine Brandon....... read more

My son and I took a short day trip to INBioparque in Santo Domingo de Heredia, Costa Rica. INBioparque is an Instituto Nacional de Biodiversidad de Costa Rica interactive theme park designed to teach visitors about Costa Rica's unique biological diversity. The park consists of many, many beautiful trails exhibiting native plant life, insects, butterflies, birds, fish, reptiles and mammals - with many of the animals walking or flying freely within the park. But don't be too relaxed during your visit. You are still in Costa Rica where wildlife is abundant and sometimes unpredictable. As an example, everything during our visit was great; the weather, the park, the people, etc. SUDDENLY, I was attacked by the biggest bird I’d ever seen ... then, just as quickly as it started, the bird stopped cold. Whew! Close one ... read more

Sorry it has been a while! The days seem to fly and I have no idea where the time goes! A couple weeks ago on Jan. 22 we went to Palmares, a yearly festival here in Costa Rica that is similar to our state fairs. There were tons of people, huge stadiums that were dance clubs, and of course tons of food stands. We went the day of the "tope" which is their version of a parade with horses. It definitely smelled when we got there! :) They also had rides for the kids. It was a neat experience, but the funny thing was you had to pay to use the bathrooms! It was only like 40 cents but it was still different! The weekend following Palmares, Jan. 23 and 24, we had another excursion ... read more

Well... the following day brought lots! We headed out of Montezuma early, no revisit to the waterfalls. We knew we had a long day of travel ahead of us..but we ended up waiting at the bus stop for the first leg of our journey, for an hour and a half beyond when we thought the bus was going to be leaving! That to begin with set our day back a bit. While waiting we were approached by multiple LARGE bluish iguanas! And what we later found out to be a kinkaju? To me it looked like a HUGE reddish squirl with a big black stripe down it´s back. We finally got on the bus, and headed to Paquera to catch a ferry. Once the ferry was loaded with cars and people and trucks... and one ATV ... read more

So, first off, my backpack got left in Texas. Super start to the trip. I still don´t have it, but I have been told that it is going through customs and should be at my hostel in a few hours. My fingers are crossed. So lets just say that last night was a bit ...disapointing. I spent the morning sitting around the pool being in a generally bad mood and worried about if it was even going to come back. At the time it was completely MIA. This mornging I met my first friend, Lisa, who I have been walking around town with most of the afternoon. She is from Austrailia and leaves tomorrow morning. I will stay in San Jose for another night and then take off. I still haven´t figured out where I will ... read more

We had a day to prepare the ground in San Jose before the parents landed. They were due in late that evening so we dutifully lined up a sandwich and tropical fruits picnic for their arrival snack. Our evening at the airport proved entertaining as we lived the anguish of the taxi drivers. Those who had bookings firmly pressed their name cards against the windows of the arrivals area desperate for their targets not to be picked off by the airport's own taxi service. The joy when they were successful in their quest was akin to the arrival of a close relative that they had not seen in twenty years. Many were unsuccessful at finding their freshly arrived customers and most likely went home empty handed. It was rewarding viewing and good to see the karma ... read more

Today I visited Turubari Park where I went zip lining through the canopy. It was a lot of fun, but first I need to explain the ridiculousness of our trip up to the park. The road from San Jose was very curvy. While our program directors had warned us about it, I was not expecting it as bad as it was. To get a handle on it, think about Badger Hill and lengthen it by 50 km or so and more narrow with people walking and cycling on the sides. There were so many times I thought the bus was going to hit the oncoming car or people. I didn't even make it out of the San Jose metropolitan area before I started to feel queazy. I even took dramamine. So I now have an assigned ... read more
