Thursday
Breakfast again on our deck. (Bob makes good coffee!) I noticed that the trees were full of large blue birds with black tufted feathers. I googled and found that they were white-throated magpie jays, 17 to 22 inches in length. The local name for them is "urraca". We left some bread on the railing for them. Also spotted a squirrel, called a variegated squirrel, very different from those at home. These are more orange in color, have a black back, and a bushy gray and black tail.
Today we walked south along the ocean. Lots of rocks and fishing boats, beautiful scenery. We found the path for the waterfalls, a series of three. We got to the first one, a series of small cascades, very clear water. Our book says to follow the well-marked trails, but we tend to disagree with the "well-marked" part. Lots of climbing on rocks and tree roots, holding on vines to pull yourself along. A younger couple in front of us tried to follow a trail up to the second falls, but turned around and said they couldn't get through. We decided to forego that path. I
found another path which was not too bad, but we ended up back on the road. We followed the road up further, looking for another entrance to the falls, but found none. We will have to get better directions next time.
We walked back to our hotel, past some interesting hotels right on the ocean. Some were somewhat hippie-type places, very colorful. We stopped at the bus station (just a parking lot near the ocean) to check the schedules, although we will be here for three more days. The bus station is across the street from the soccer field. Just as I was looking up into the trees by the ocean, a little monkey with a banana climbed up a limb. He just looked at me, a perfect location for a photo! I looked him up when we got back to the hotel and found that he was a white-headed capuchin.
Went back to the hotel to rest and hang out in the hammocks. Our railing bread was gone. Saw a couple of little geckos running around on the ceiling beams. We have seen more wildlife today than at the reserve, and no admission
fee!
Later in the afternooon we walked north along the beach, lots of driftwood but very few shells. As you go further north, the beach gets nicer (finer sand, fewer rocks and driftwood). Many big rocks out in the ocean, where huge waves lap up and spray mist. It was a hot walk. Temp is in the high 80s but the humidity makes it feel much warmer. Another beautiful walk.
Back at the hotel, a monkey jumped on a tree right in front of Bob's hammock. I watched him jump from tree to tree, then up on the roof. He actually hung over the roof and looked in at us. So cute! Spent the rest of the afternoon monkey watching.
Later when we got back from the grocery store, we saw a coati (member of the raccoon family, but longer and thinner) walk in before us, then go up the stairs that led to our room level. Didn't see him when we got upstairs, but we will keep out door closed. We asked Jeiner (the host) how to get up to the second and third waterfalls. He said you have to
actually climb up the rocks of the first falls, and it is very dangerous. So we will cross that adventure off our list and find something else to do tomorrow.
Another fun day.

Great wildlife watching! Fun to see the squirrels and monkeys. Nice that you get so close to the birds and animals. Have a continued great trip.
