This was an incredible day! Tortuguero Park is a naturalist's dream. Our "hotel" could only be reached by a 45-minute boat ride up the Tortuguero canal. We stayed at Pachira Lodge, where we had our own cabin on stilts in the rain forest. It is rustic, with no televisions, phones or air conditioning. The trees surrounding the cabins are filled with howler monkeys, who wake you up before sunrise with incredibly loud grunting and barking sounds. Not to mention the many species of birds. We went on 2 canal cruises with local wildlife guides spotting and explaining about the birds, animals and plants that we saw along with way. We would never have seen as much as we did without them. In between, we enjoyed the lovely pool and walked around the beautiful grounds. It is ... read more

Wow – this is really the way to see this country! As we travel, our tour guide tells us about the country, the people, the politics, and of course all about the plants and animals and birds. My experience with excursions from a cruise ship is that they drive you in silence to your destination, then you all pile out to look around, then they herd you through a gift shop before taking you back to the ship. This tour with Caravan is a non-stop learning adventure. On our way to Tortuguero National Park on the Caribbean side of the country, we drove through Braulio Carrillo park. This is the same park where we went ziplining in the rain in December. It wasn’t raining this time, but it is up high in the cloud forest, so ... read more

Definitely a highlight of my trip!I decided to go solo for this trip as all the arranged trips seemed expensive, it worked out exactly the same but glad I did the trip from the Caribbean coast rather than return from San Jóse. I got the 8am bus from Cahuita to Puerto Límon, this took some running as the hotel guy went AWOL, time is not precious here and for once the bus turned up early!!! After a mad dash I get the bus and after an hour or so arrive in Puerto Límon. I take a taxi to Moín where some huge ships are in port, I, however, am catching a small 10 seater boat. It leaves at 10 and costs $35, this sounds extortionate for transport but it turns out it also a tour. The ... read more

When we last left our Costa Rican adventure, our goal was to venture to Tortuguero to see a tortuga feliz (happy sea turtle). Instead, we witnessed much more. Parque Nacional Tortuguero protects the nesting beach for green, leatherback and hawksbill turtles. It´s the most important green turtle hatchery in not only the Caribbean, but the entire Western Hemisphere - and and we were just in time for the end of nesting season. Tortuguero is only accessible by boat so Trev and I left the big city to take two buses and a two-hour boat ride through canals that snake through what they call the ¨mini Amazon¨. It reminded us of a certain theme park jungle cruise (same sweet boat), only through an actual jungle with real crocodiles, flamingos, turtles, blue and yellow butterflies, cows and horses ... read more

unfortunately my last blog has disappeared?? I will see if Martin can recover it. But I mentioned there that I had a trip coming up. Neckermann needed a Dutch guide who can speak Spanish as well. There you go...........ME! It was a 10 day tour from the East coast to the west. Martin came a long as the photographer. First I had to go to San Jose and wave my little Neckermann sign around and hope my group would be a great bunch of people. They turned out fine. The youngest being 23 and the oldest 31. So let's go to a bar in town and talk about our tour and get to know each other a bit. After a few beers and juices, everyone was ready for bed. The next day was an early morning ... read more
