Costa Rica 2013: Day 10: Playas del Coco Day 3:

Today we'd decided to head to the other nearby beach, Playa Hermosa. After coffee and a good breakfast of fresh fruit and toast with jam, we mounted up. From the map, there was a shorter route from the north end of Playas del Coco, instead of the main street and road we'd come in on the bus. It probably was shorter, but... As we left the town, we started to climb... and climb. It was so steep most of the way that we had to walk our bikes, and even take frequent rests. We finally reached the top, and had some great views of the our beach below. From there, we headed downhill, some of which was so steep we didn't dare ride, so we ended up walking the bikes downhill a lot too!

We finally reached the bottom and pedaled to the beach itself. Playa Hermosa has a lot of condominiums and fancy housing areas, but only a handful of restaurants, and a Luperon supermarket. The beach itself was quite pretty though, and mostly Ticos hanging out. We did spot one fancy restaurant that appeared to have a

number of tourist types eating late breakfast or early lunch. We'd spotted several good-sized iguanas along the way, but were very surprised to see three vultures near the beach feeding on something... an iguana I think. After strolling along the beach for a while and picking up a few seashells, we biked back to the main road and noticed a sign for the supermarket. We rode down to it so we could pick up a couple of cold refreshing drinks for our ride (although mostly walking again) back to Playas del Coco.

We reversed our trip there since we'd have to climb the big hill either way, but then would have a much longer road trip back to Playas del Coco. Again, we had to walk up most of the way to the top, then walk down a lot of the downhill since it was so steep. When we finally reached the town, we decided to return the bikes a little early since it was on the way and we were both pretty tired of riding (read sore butts). We got back to Laura's House around 11:30, so we decided to relax in our pool a little, then head

to the beach, originally planning on swimming a bit there too. Well, when we reached the beach and started wading in, the water just seemed so muddy that neither of us really wanted to try swimming. Instead, we just strolled along the edge a while, then returned to our room to shower and change before lunch.

After our fairly cold shower (the B&B lady called the water warm!), we walked down to the main street to eat a big lunch at Papagayo's Seafood. I'd read good reviews of the place, so we decided we'd give it a try. We had a nice table on the 2nd floor overlooking the street. Manoli had a mixed seafood platter and I had a plate of breaded sea bass, with a nice sauce and steamed veggies and potato wedges. Both dishes were excellent. The waiter said they didn't have coffee, but recommended a refreshing glass of what he called Jamaca, a flower they distilled or something. I have to admit it was quite tasty and refreshing. The total was about 16,000 colones or 30 dollars, but the food was very good.

We returned to the room to rest a bit and avoid

the usual afternoon shower, then headed back out for some final shopping before dinner. Again, since we had a big lunch, Manoli decided to get some fresh fruit at the market and I added a delicious chile dog from Jimmy's Burguers (yes, that's the way they spell it). The hot dog was very good and the fruit was delicious. We ended up checking out all 3 supermarkets, so I got to drink another cold Dr. Pepper, only available at the AutoMercado. We watched some TV, American shows with Spanish subtitles, then Manoli read while I worked on the blog.

Tomorrow we leave for Manuel Antonio National Park. We'll catch an early morning bus to Liberia, then one from there to Puntarenas, then from there to Quepos, and finally to Manuel Antonio for our 3-night stay at Hostel vista Serena. We are pretty assured of seeing monkeys and sloths, so we'll see you there.
