Our stay at the Springs Resort and Spa at the base of the Arenal volcano simply went too quickly. The beauty of the property, the incorporation of the natural resources and the unwavering eagerness of the staff to provide excellent service made for an impressionable stay. As we watched the property and the view of the volcano disappear through the windows of our transport van, we knew we had experienced something special over the last 4 days. We now headed off for the second half of our Costa Rican stay on the Pacific Coast side at the Westin Hotel in the Playa Conchal Reserve. Enough good things cannot be said about the Springs Resort & Spa in La Fortuna. The property sits in an ideal location overlooking the Arenal River and valley at the base of ... read more

Our driver for this portion of the trip was a young man of 27 years who drove the narrow winding road with the confidence of knowing it turn for turn. We hoped that was the case due to the lack of guard rails, safe pullouts and our driver’s uninhibited willingness to follow vehicles in front of us only inches from their bumper. Then again, unless I am personally at the wheel, I am never completely fond of another’s driving habits. For the next 4.5 hours, we did our best to be polite passengers, look out the side windows and avoid noticing the slower traffic in front of us and just held on tight to the seat fabric during failed attempts to pass it. Driving through several small towns gave us the opportunity to observe the non-tourist, ... read more

The last three days and nights have been a true adventure of awesome sights and thrills. As you know, I am a weather nerd to say the least and Costa Rica weather is anything but predictable. Things change and happen here fast. Yesterday morning started with thick humidity and heat. It was Zip Line Tour day and we were excited to get going. A short ride from our resort across the jungle valley floor below and we were being fitted for our equipment and harnesses at the base of the volcano. We were loaded into 4 wheel drive trucks with bleacher type aluminum seats mounted over the beds and enjoyed the breeze cooling us as we climbed higher up the base of the volcano. Jungle noises kicking it up a notch, all of us just stared ... read more

Conchal beach is one of my favorites ones in all around costa rica. White color sands and clear waters, add a beautiful landscape of the pacific ocean with advantage to visit another 5 near by beaches similar to conchal beach in just 20 minutes (by the way and car). You can find , besides conchal, the next beaches with similar characteristics: -Tamarindo -Junquillal -Avellanas -Brasilito -Flamingo. The nature enviroment ( on summer and most of the times) is dry forest, calm waters and the view of small islands, perfect to scuba diving and make a ride in boath or catamaran.... read more

FOREST AROUND CONCHAL BEACH

Playa Conchal - WOW. We drove north to Brasilito following the GPS and it took us to this rutted dirt road which 'dropped off' onto the beach. I immediately said no, no, no, back up the car. No place to turn around so I got out to help Doug reverse without going off road or running over the dog laying on the road side. Then we found the town square and parked. This guy in a lowered, tricked-out prelude pulled up beside us and started asking if we wanted to go on a tour. This is the kind of guy you avoid in canada but here, no. We had a great conversation, he showed us his restaurant which was closed for the day but open the other 6 days a week. Then he took us to ... read more
