Hello everyone
I hope those spanish speakers amongst you could make some sense out of my homework (please don´t be too harsh with the mistake spotting). Before I get going, I should warn you that I´m pretty sure that my brain is operating a one in one out policy, so for every spanish word I learn, my English seems to get worse, so apologes if I´m even mor incorent than normel.
Anyway, although I think I probably say this at the start of every entry, we´re having a brilliant time here in Flamingo and really enjoying it. We really feel that our spanish is improving every day and I´ve now had long debates in Spanish with my teachers about virtually every topic under the sun - 4 hours of pretty much just chatting to them every day is actually quite a long time and I now know everything about them from their son´s eating habits to the pros and cons of tourism, the recycling policies of the governement, the problems in the national football team, chat up lines and dating etiquette, etc. Its a bit wierd but really good for our Spanish. Amy and I have also been in
different classes the whole time which has been good for comparing stories at the end of every day.
Our typical day involves our 4 hours of spanish every morning followed by lunch, a swim in the sea, lying on the beach for a bit, cleaning off the sand in one of the swimming pools, lying round a bit more then heading back to our village on the school bus just in time to watch the sunset into the sea at our local beach (its gorgeous and amazing to see every day) and if we feel like it have a final swim before wandering back to our house. We eat dinner with our family every night and the food is generally pretty good, loads of fresh fish caught from the sea by our tico (Costa Rican) father that morning and lots of rice and refried beans called frijoles. They are big on their carbs though and our particular favourite recently, which I´m glad to say has been a one off, was a dinner of rice, fried beans, spaghetti and a side portion of mash potato (no meat or veg). Our mother is really nice and chats to us about our
day and homework etc and seems to giggle quite a lot, our father just grins massively every time we see him and I occasionally talk to him about fishing and football, and the daughter, who is 18, seems a little more reluctant to hang out with us. We feel at home there anyway. After dinner we settle down for a couple of hours homework before heading out to one of the local bars for a drink with our mates. It’s a really relaxing and fun way of life while still actually learning quite a lot.
Apart from the above we haven´t done a huge amount. The weekend before last we went to a beach called Tamarindo and I did a surfing lesson for two hours. It was really good fun and I managed to stand and stay up the board a few times in the two hours but by the end I was absolutely knackered and had swallowed far more sea water than is good for you I´m sure. Last Friday, 9 of us from the school went sport fishing and snorkelling which was also good fun and I managed to pull in a 1 metre long needle fish
Fishing
Grrr....man fights fish, man wins!!! which was quite amazing. An American guy who has now left took the trophy picture of me so we´re hoping hes going to email to us but for now you´ll just have to imagine my cheesy grin with the fish. We´ve also done a bit of skin boarding on the beach, played tennis (blimey that was hot!, the temperature varies here between about 25 at night to 35 in the day), a bit of crazy dancing at the local night club on the beach (that was hot hot too actually), a cooking class, you know the average stuff that everyone does.
Think that’s about it for now. We start our travels again on Saturday and whilst we´ll be really sad to leave, I´m looking forward to getting back on the road so who knows where we´ll be next time we write.
I hope you´re all well and congratulations to Rog and Vicki on their marriage.
Love Si.xx
