12/30/08 - A slow day checking out more sites and beaches in Grand Cayman.
Some hard rain in the early morning, and a cloudy start to the day, so we got off to a slow start this morning. Balcony too wet for sitting out for breakfast. Eventually gathered up and headed out on another exploration day in late morning, with packed lunch (more turkey sandwiches, and PBJ for DGS).
We headed east again on the bypass, to avoid busy cruise ship day in town. Just went to look for the small golf course that is mentioned in one of the guide books, but it does not seem to be findable, or at least not to the general public that we could determine. Saw a little more of the suburban area out in Savannah and stopped at the Gov Michael Gore Bird Sanctuary - very small, and at this time of year very few birds, but there were dozens of turtles anxious to be fed. We contributed some of our fish food - figured that was safe for turtles who are probably eating much worse rations.
Finally found the small parking area next to a cemetery that I think
is Spotts Beach, very pretty site. It has a maintained porta-potty (with TP), a dock, and a small picnic area. It’s a nice site, but water still kind of cool and rough, only a few sunbathers there, no one in the water. We might want to try it out again on a calmer day.
Drove around Prospect Point, which is supposed to have a public beach, but we didn’t see it, and the turnoff at the obelisk marking the old fort was very rocky, with private homes around it, so we continued on to our old second favorite, Smith’s Cove. Not too busy there today. Had lunch and DGS headed on into the water. He reported that it was too “soggy” to see any fish (I think he meant rough and sandy), so I didn’t suit up, just took some photos and relaxed in the sand. Looked through a real estate catalog. Prices seem high to astronomical, and there’s a lot on the market.
Stopped briefly at Eden Rock and determined that it is not an appealing snorkel site for us - just a rocky ladder entry, with no beach. Only three ships still in town by this
late (a little after 3 - they stayed in port later on Christmas Eve), so it was easy to drive back through town (and they were loading people back up). Price of gas seems to have dropped in town, at least at one station it was down to $2.99.
We stopped at another dive shop, looking for something that might help DGS’ ears, and also went to the taffy shop - always a fun place for a sweet treat. I got a yummy hazelnut truffle, and got some taffy for the “kids” ($9.61). Bought a plastic waterproof bag that is supposed to work with a camera, since my little Vivitar UW camera isn’t working; hope to try it tomorrow; my main camera is also acting up, so if it gets zapped in the bag, oh well; it seems to be time to get a new one anyway. It was still a little chilly (not really, just compared to some other days) - wore our new t-shirts instead of tank tops.
Went into the pool a little while after we got back, fixed dinner, and I had some hammock time (I think I dozed off, after DGS gave up
Hammock boy
View from my balcony (again) trying to dislodge a coconut and went back upstairs. DD spent another long time on her laptop (why?). We’re starting to feel sad about getting ready to go home in a few days. We’re hoping the weather will be good enough for a stingray trip later in the week, but other than that, we’ve done most of what we wanted to see this time. DD hasn’t gotten to do a horse ride yet, but maybe she’ll get to in the next couple of days.
Just another calm, relaxing day poking about in paradise today!
