I couldn’t imagine myself on a cruise but never say never and when a package with a cruise sort of dropped into my lap back in December and the rain kept falling and Suzanne and I still had time to do some travelling together we thought “yes let’s do it”. A flights sale in January had us picking up a bargain and so it was we flew off to Tampa on a not too full flight even bagging 3 seats each so lots of space to lie down on the 9+hour flight. A good night’s sleep in a nearby hotel and the next day we were on a shuttle bus to the port. As complete novices to cruising we had no idea what to expect ( we are ... read more

A new year, time for another trip. I definitely wanted to start the new year on a good note so it was time once again for another trip outside the country. I planned this one with my new friends Melanie and Troy whom I had met on my Intrepid tour of Morocco this past March. We all enjoyed that tour so much that we decided to do another Intrepid tour, this time to Belize. After a long day's work, I left LAX airport on Friday night for my red-eye flight to Miami. In Miami, I would meet up with Melanie and Troy at La Carreta, a Cuban restaurant located in the airport. The flight with American Airlines was uneventful and we arrived on time in Miami at around 5:30am. With the unusually cold weather conditions going ... read more

Doing most of my travels in Asia, I didn't expect at all to get out of a bus in Belize City, without getting loitered by hundreds of Taxi drivers and ferry-ticket sellers. But no one seemed to be interested in our arrival on this colourful painted wooden Bus terminal. “Its not supposed to cost more than five US for a taxi to the harbour” our Israelian mate Ian says. I nod “allright” not feeling like bargaining at 7 am, after a night in a Bus and a border crossing full of negotiations with Mexican customs at 5 in the morning. We were all sure that they cant charge us 30 US to get out of the country, but well, they could. At least the Belizians didn't charge us any money to get into theirs, but did ... read more

So much has happened since I wrote last. We have been gone for 7 days but it seems like longer. We left Caye Caulker on Thursday. We had planned to stay one night and ended up staying for 3, it was delightful. We missed our boat ride back to Belize City and had to take the 1:30 boat which was kinda a bummer since we wanted to leave at 10:30 but such things happen. When we arrived back to Belize City we walked from the dock to the bus station and caught our first bus to our couch surfing host's place outside Belize City. We were a little nervous about missing the bus, the way they do things isn't very clear but it seems to work. I really don't understand how they know when to stop, ... read more

Disaster struck yesterday! We have been staying on the Island of Caye (prounounced "Key") Caulker since Sunday night on the recommendations of some friends and people we met in Belize City. It's a gorgeous little tropical paradise, complete with lizards, pretty little fish, Rastafarian drug dealers and brightly painted buildings in pink and green and blue. The ocean is painfully beautiful when the sun is shining, turquoise and tanzanite. The first day was walking along the beach, exploring the jungle, and finding friends among the tourists. We've met a young couple from New Zealand who tell us we have to come visit their family's winery (!) when we head towards Australia. We've also met several others we may meet up with again in San Ignacio or further down the road. Yesterday, after I remembered to charge ... read more

What a day! Waking up in not one, but two strange beds in the same 24 hour period is new. Our last few days were hectic, getting the apartment cleaned out for inspection and making sure we didn't leave anything undone before the plane took us away. Yesterday, Saturday, was a bit of a respite since we spent the day with Eya's parents after spending the night. We got through the last of our goodbyes and drove to the airport for the mandatory safety groping so the terrorists don't win, then got on a plane or three. Airports are a blur, always uncomfortable, slower than you wish and more rushed than you wish at the same time. 5PM Pacific through 9 AM Belize local time were waiting in line, failing to fall asleep, and the unexpected ... read more

I really didn't know how I was going to go on when I woke up in Houston, I was so exhausted and my head hurt. Thankfully once I was off the plane and got some food I was feeling much better. Exhausted still but not ill. We arrived in Belize which had blue skies and big white puffy clouds. As expected it was humid but I did not realize how hot it was going to be. I'm not complaining, I am so happy to have escaped the long cold winter of Spokane. We took a taxi to our guesthouse, it cost $25 US which seemed like a lot. The driver was nice, he sounded like he was from Jamaica but he said he was born and raised here. Seaside, our guesthouse isn't as nice as the ... read more

Tuesday 16/10/12 – Our first night in Belize was everything that we expected: hot, noisy and exhausting. We awoke when the sun rose as our room had no curtains – and trust me it rises early here (they don’t observe daylight savings). We walked up to the local dive shop which backs on to the main river of Belize City. Seeing the city in the morning at high tide is really something special. The ocean is right at the edge of the road and at people’s door steps. The city is situated right at sea level and apparently when it rains at high tide the water doesn’t run off into the ocean so people get around in canoes! The city is intertwined with over 200 canals which are always full of water and rubbish. The city ... read more

July 16 - Today was a good day. I got up at 6:00am and had some cereal, and then headed to the water taxi for the 7:00am boat. At the dock in Belize City I met Major Tom and the two other people on the tour with us, Fran and Jim from Philly. We had to drive quite a way to get to the boat that would take us to Lamanai, one of the Mayan ruins in the area. Belize is full of Mayan ruins, and Lamanai is a special one, in the rainforest. Much of it is still covered with jungle. The Mayans set this site up about 1500 years ago, and it was one of the last inhabited sites. The boat ride out there wasn't ideal. It started to rain along the way, and ... read more

July 14 - Sleep was better last night, considering it was already 6am at home when I went to bed here at 10pm. I woke up around 6am and had some cereal and watched a couple episodes of My name is Earl. It is weird having a tv at all on my vacation, but even stranger that I am watching American tv shows on American tv channels in Belize. I usually just get to do this at Christmas when I'm home. It is a small pleasure. I left my room at 7am for the 7:30 ferry, but I was already there five minutes later and the 7am ferry was still loading. So I walked on a little further and then back. There were a lot of people already there for the next ferry and I realized ... read more
