For our 20th wedding anniversary we decided to fly to Florida and take the Disney cruise to the Bahamas.
So on December 15, 1992, a Tuesday, we flew from Brussels to JFK where we stayed the night at an airport hotel. Early the following morning we caught a flight from La Guardia to West Palm Beach. Mom, Sue and Ron and Brendan and Alyssa met us at the airport and we drove to our home in Lake Worth.
On December 18th, a Friday, we drove up the coast to Port Canaveral where we boarded the Big Red Boat for a three day Disney cruise to the Bahamas. This was our first cruise. We checked in and found our cabin, and then returned to the deck for the departure festivities which included throwing spools of paper to the people on the dock. Shortly after we had the life boat drill where we all wore our life vests and were instructed what to do in case of emergency. Then we had dinner and were introduced to our dinner table partners for the rest of the cruise.
Dinner was followed by evening entertainment put on by Disney characters. The kids had
a great time.
Early morning of December 19th the ship pulled into the port at Nassau, Bahamas. Soon we were on shore to shop at the market. We went on a tour of Nassau and saw the fort and beach homes of the rich and famous. We returned to the ship at mid afternoon for the kids to participate in the events planned for them. Linda and I just relaxed.
On December 20th the ship departed Nassau for a remote key which was set up for the cruise passengers to enjoy the beach and various events planned for the kids, including a treasure hunt. It was a pleasant relaxing day.
On December 21st, a Monday we returned to Port Canaveral to an awaiting rental car that was part of the three day cruise/four day Disney World package. We drove to nearby Kennedy Space Center and took the tour of the rockets and space shuttle and launch facilities. Then were drove to our hotel at Disney World. We checked into the Caribbean Beach Resort where we would be for the next three nights. We spent the rest of the afternoon swimming and evening checking our the extensive facilites
at the hotel.
On December 22nd we got the early entrance to the Magic Kingdom. In addition to catching all the rides, we saw the Christmas parade down Main Street that would be broadcast on TV on Christmas Day. The parade included several TV and movie stars, and all the kids' favorite characters. We returned to our resort in the afternoon for more swimming and a siesta so that we could recharge for the evening activities at the Majic Kingdom. The night was topped off with Tinkerbell descending from Cinderella's Castle and fire works.
On December 23rd, our 20th Anniversary we visited the Majic Kingdom again, and finished the rides we hadn't done the day before, and rode some of our favorites like the Pirates of the Caribbean again and again. We celebrated our anniversary with dinner at Cinderella's Castle and she wished us a Happy Anniversary. The kids were impressed.
The next morning, Christmas Eve, we checked out and drove to Mom's home in Lake Worth. We finished our Christmas shopping that afternoon and spent the evening preparing for Christmas Day.
Christmas Day Sue, Rob, Brendan and Alyssa joined Mom and our family for the
opening of our presents followed by Christmas dinner with turkey and all the trimmings.
We spent the next two weeks in Florida, swimming at the many beaches, including Sanibel Island, and otherwise relaxing. We returned to Brussels on Sunday, January 10th.
