A little of this and a little of that Kind of like most of your recipes, just add a little of this and a little of that...lol I will see if Mark will allow me to disclose his famous Shepard's Pie recipe. Mark???
good dinner One day you will have to share the Shepards Pie with the rest of us. sounds good but have to have some measurements and not in Russian, at least for your mother.
Glad the dinner went well even if you did have thick potatos. Ha
nice do1 1 1 Well you look alot like the year you dressed as a woman for Halloween and Jetta dressed as the boy. Remember how bad your feet hurt after running around in high heels? Now the world knows. Ha
Talk to Jetta about the Cat Hair You will have to talk to Jetta about the cat hair. Maybe she can send you money to get a maid...lol
It all depends on who's party it is. For visitors and the boss, it comes from petty cash; most of the birthday parties it comes from the person who's birthday it is. Very different than in the States.
Drinking on the Job hey their are days i would love to have a drink on the job. I have a question?. who buys the Voldka? the HR Manager or is it runing in the water fountain?
I am glad the weather is holding out for you. the temp here is been getting down to mid 40's to low 50's at night and upper 70's during the day wow great sleeping weather. every else is doing great Tourqe says Meow and yes he is sleeping under the covers latley. Cat hair everywhere..... LOL well go get them and dont let them pass you by man.
Sink It is good to hear from you and glad you are enjoying the pictures. There is no doubt sometimes I feel like I am on Mars with some of the thought processes here, but it is an experience of a lifetime! I am sorry I am going to miss you while I am home visiting.
I think the sink is about 10x10 so you were pretty close. One dinner and the sink is full so at least I do the dishes often. No dishwasher to "hide" them in. I do not have anything too large for the sink until I find the cookie I am looking for and then yes, I will probably have to it in the tub. The other thing that is interesting is the use the same faucet for both the tub and the sink in the bathroom.
I have not made my crusts yet so I will take you up on your offer especially if it is flaky. I will give one a try tomorrow (Sunday) for some guests I am having over on Tuesday. I am making an Old Fashion Cream pie. My boss does not trust my crusts yet so he told me before I waste the pecans he gave me, he wanted me to make a crust and just put brown sugar and cinnamon on it. I also found nutmeg so that will be a nice spice to have also for pumpkin pie and my mom's receipe for old fashion cream pie.

You're finally hearing from me Sometimes sounds like you're on Mars, and not on the other side of this planet. Love all the photos. I have a recipe for pie crust using cooking oil, and it's very flaky. Interested? I'll be on vacation when you're here, so you can use my area while visiting. Sorry I'll miss you. One question -- the pic of your kitchen sink looks like it's only about 8x8 inches. Do you have to wash large items in the tub?
We miss you too And by the way, I finally realized I had to go and manage my messages on my own travelblog. I got to read all your comments and answer your questions. I'm sorry I was so dense! Thanks a lot for checking the site out and commenting. It means a lot. :0)
i looked at www.baking911.com and they said to use all three of those 1 to 1 so i guess if its 1 cup of karo use 1 cup of the sub but it didnt say anything about not using as much sugar. it would tend to be pretty sweet if you didnt, so i think i would cut the sugar back to 1/2 a cup instead of a full cup. yes honey is one of the 3 choices, theres honey. maple syrup or molasses.
why dont bosses ever ask for something simple lmao
Honey? But will honey work as a substitue for corn syrup? If I understood you correctly, honey will make it sweeter so should I back done on the sugar if I am going to use honey? I have not looked for molasses, but I think I can get that, I think. I know maple syrup is out of the questions. I am going through all of this because my boss wants a pecan pie with the pecans he gave me from South Georgia. Thank goodness you can not find pecans here otherwise he would ask for this all of the time....lol
substitutes again lol its me again my source says you can substitute light or dark corn syrup for honey, maple syrup or molasses. using these will make your recipe sweeter and have a little different consistancy but they will work.
good luck
lol i love it when a man cooks lmao
I Am Still Laughing! I am still laughing and shaking my head about the milk. It is one thing if it is just an outdated law or regulation, but to sit there and honestly respond saying it is based on science should tell you something.
Another funny from today was the State Laboratory. I met with the Chef Vet from the State Lab because I wanted to see if she could assist with some shelf life studies. All they test for is total plate count. If I test for E.coli and found it, I will have to condemn all of the production, yes, we are talking raw chicken and like Salmonella, Russians think that chicken is Salmonella and Ecoli free. It is about time they took their heads out of the sand.
Where is Jason when I need him?!?!
Pie Shells Thanks for the recipes. I will give them a try this weekend and let everyone know how they came out. Any suggestions for Karo for the pecan pie? I found one recipe using brown sugar, but seeing if anyone has another suggestion. I can get honey, will that work to replace the Karo? Thanks again for keeping up with my blog; glad to have you along. What part of KY?
pie shell recipes i found a couple of recipes using butter for you to try if you like its a little long so i guess email would be better, think i can send it thru here on that. if not let me know where and how but yes you can sub butter for crisco just make sure the butter is kept cold.
right now i live in virginia but i grew up in mich and lived for a while in ky. lol i love to travel and now i cant afford to do much so i read journals thats how i found you.watch for my email ill copy those right now and send it
Glad to hear you are keeping busy even when not working, I'm sure that helps pass the time. Things are quiet here in Louisiana and the weather is so much nicer. Ken is still in Georgia helping his company open a new branch and will be for two more weeks before he comes home so I'm bored to death and concentrating on school. Much better class now, "Paradigms of Health". I liked the information about the milk, I may use that in my class when we talk about outdated prevention! lol Take care of yourself. You are missed.
I had to ask Well, I now know what happens when little girls have to go to the bathroom, their mom's hold them while they are in a sitting position ALONG THE SIDEWALK! I just had to ask.
Overcast day today, but was still nice to get out and walk. I did find rosemerry seeds so I will grow some from scratch. I sure enjoyed that roast when I got back. Oh did it taste good. Not as good as Mom makes, but the smell as I opened the door made my mouth water and it was good. Baking my zucchini cake/bread now.
It Helps Angie, thanks for reading and thanks for the information. I will have to measure a package this afternoon as I am about to use up the last of my zucchini. I have been using one package for one teaspoon. I am guessing it may be a little on the heavy side, but so far, everything has come out well.
Where are you from? Thanks for reading!
Nice Having Others Read Jon,
Thanks for reading about my trip in Russia. I am actually in Obninsk, which is about 100 km southwest of Moscow, down the Kiev Highway if you know where that is.
So far, I have been pretty welcomed as an American. They is a lot of mistrust at work where the Russians think we are trying to take everything from them, but a lot of people in the town love to come up and practice their English even if it is one sentence. I have met several people and joined them for drinks.
It is very different than the States, but I am getting along pretty well. Thanks for reading and posting.
Thank you! I still do not know what it is about that church, but I love looking at it every morning coming to work. It just stands out and pictures just do not do it justice. I am slowly finding most of the things I need to cook, but no Crisco here so having some "imported" in with one of the consultants that is coming next week. I will try to make a pie shell with butter but Crisco works so much better. I will probably bring my candy thermometer and pastry cutter back with me to also help. I was never good with dropping hot candy in a cup of cold water and knowing if it was soft, hard, etc. ball.
I loved your pictures from Alaska!
You're pretty good with that digital camera! The church in shadow with the sun behind it is terrific. Lovely place. I can send you some baking supplies. My mom will have a lot of it and she has extra pans, etc. We're big bakers in my family so we know what you need.
Just an idea. Svetlana maybe? I lived in Russia last year, and kept a diary here just as you do, it would be very interesting to learn how people react to you as a non Russian speaker, and of how you're adapting. Which town is it that you work in?
Jon
Glad you're having nice weather. We're actually having the best weather right now out of the whole year. Beautiful 65 degrees in the morning and mid 80's in the afternoon. I hate being inside. Can't wait to see the pictures though, I miss the maple trees I grew up with in Illinois because they were everywhere. Good luck with the new translator - be nice! lol
vanilla conversions hi im really enjoying your journal its nice to read what the real world in russia is like.
according to baking 911.com
1 rounded teaspoon of vanilla powder equals 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
i hope this helps
I changed my portrait from my lastest picture from Tokyo where I saw ZED by Cirque du Soleil and even go to meet ZED.
Summer has pasted and now it is winter here in cold dark (short days with little sunshine) Russia. For those that did not hear, I signed on for another year so I will be living here in Obninsk until January 2009.
It is finally summer here in Russian so thought I would change the picture. Enjoy the stories, adventures, blunders, etc. as I live and work in Russia.
I do not want to loose any of my emails and stories, so I am just going to add to this existing one. ... full info
