Quick Notes (not very quick this time) 1. To begin we would like to point out that our blog allows you to leave us comments. We highly encourage this and will be awarding "Europe" points to those who entertain us through your comments. At the end, the person with the most Europe points will get a gift from Europe from US! Jon Lim is currently in the lead. 2. Many people have commented on the speed with which we are conquering Europe. 21 days and 7 countries down. No, this is not the American tourist version of Blitzkrieg. It was necessary in order to get to Tuscany by late September. We assure you that our pace will slow down. But as of right now the score is Pearsons 1, Europe 0. 3. Cultural observations we would ... read more

Well, we visited Florence yesterday and liked it! It was really pretty, but unfortunately really crowded on a Saturday. Now we are in Cinque Terre, but more importantly, this blog is for pictures, so we will write more abou these cities later. ... read more

Europe » Italy » Tuscany September 22nd 2006

Quick Notes: 1. Tuscany is a must for anybody traveling to Europe (but you better like Chianti). 2. I still haven't figured out: a. how Tuscans get anything done b. how they are not all 300 pounds. They take a two hour break in the afternoon and then kick off work at five. Then they do whatever until 9PM when it is time to eat, eat, eat. They typically have four courses and then dessert. I'm usually waving the white flag after two courses and I'm sleeping at the dinner table. But not the Tuscans. As we leave the restaurant on a Thursday at 11PM, they are still walking in. We stopped in Bologna for the night so we would be closer to Tuscany. Matt's former boss had rented a villa in Tuscany for 2 weeks ... read more

Europe » Italy » Veneto » Verona September 18th 2006

Quick Notes: 1. "Red Light Stupido"! Driving here is scary and we're only in Northern Italy. They say it gets worse the farther south you go. I'm thinking of leaving the car in a garage and taking the trains. 2. Life lesson - if you buy something for $7,000 and sell it a few weeks later for $250,000, something is probably wrong. (See below). 3. Italian men are like peacocks. They wear flashy colors, bright red shoes, and love to strut. ITALY! we love the pizza and the pasta and are getting fatter by the minute! We pulled into Verona in the late afternoon and went into town on the bus for dinner. the bus managed to foil us twice--both on the way there and on the way back. those tricky italians! we found a wine ... read more

Europe » Switzerland » North-West » Lucerne September 16th 2006

Quick Notes: 1. In Switzerland you have four languages from which to choose. Only problem is that we don't speak any of them well. 2. I've realized that my conversational skills have dropped tremendously, but my communication skills have advanced greatly. This point was driven home as I tried to explain to our Spanish friends the difference between goats and sheeps. "Baaaahhhh" or "Baaaahhh (with me pulling at my beard to resemble a goat). 3. We found a way around having to use the gross campground bathrooms: Cheese Fondue! Switzerland is the most beautiful country ever. seriously. the first day we pulled into lucerne was beautiful, but it was later in the afternoon so we decided to catch up on our housecleaning and did some laundry. that was dumb because it rained straight the next 2 ... read more

Europe » Germany » Rhineland-Palatinate » Bacharach September 15th 2006

Quick Notes: 1. I found that the following is how NOT to make friends in Germany: Waiter: "So, why don't you speak German?" Matt: "Because we won the war" 2. Germans love the sausage. I ordered a plate of assorted sausages and I thought they were pulling my leg with all the different "wursts" they had Headed for the Rhineland because that is where Matts family is from and because its beautiful. we stayed 2 days in bacarach and would highly recommend it. we wandered the streets and ate in cute restaurants. you know how they try to make you think you are in a medieval village in busch gardens but it ends up feeling fake? well this was exactly like that! it was gorgeous. anyway, nothing exciting to report about bacarach, but it was quite ... read more

Europe » Netherlands » North Holland » Amsterdam September 13th 2006

Quick Notes: 1. Amsterdam is like going to the biggest PHISH concert - hippies, weed, drug deals, and bad hippy music. 2. The nice parts are great, but don't spend too much time in the areas Amsterdam is really known for. 3. They don't believe in zoning in Amsterdam. This makes for some ackward situations i.e. walking out of the Anne Frank musuem and seeing a "coffee house" with lots of teenagers smoking up. Or walking by a McDonalds that is right next to a sex house. I guess the idea is to stasify all urges at once. 4. They say you should eat a "space cake" and then go to the Van Gogh museum. WRONG!!! If you are the type that would indulge, the Heineken tour is much weirder. Christina and I were sober as ... read more

Europe » Netherlands » South Holland » Delft September 11th 2006

sorry its been so long. you would think finding an internet cafe in europe would be easier. Quick Notes: 1. Holland is FLAT!!! This lends itself to lots and lots of bikers (not the Harley kind). Legally they do not have the right-of-way and must yield to cars, but nobody has told them that. Anyway, it makes for tricky driving because now you have two more lanes of traffic to pay attention to. Detail (but not much for Delft) We arrived in Delft after spending the morning getting our car window fixed. (see the brussels entry if you are confused). We loved Delft. It is a small country town, famous for its Delft porcelain (white and blue patterned.) We relaxed the first night in the beautiful town square and had a delicious dinner with some delicious ... read more

Europe » Belgium » Brussels-Capital Region » Brussels September 10th 2006

Overview comments 1. The Belgium police like to Blame The Victim. We found this out first hand when the cop asked us "Why did you park on a busy street in the middle of the day on a Sunday in downtown Brussels" Silly us. 2. Brussels was nice, but Ive come to the conclusion that all major cities in Europe should be skipped. Or, if you really, really, want to do it, just go for one day and get out as soon as possible and move on to the countryside where the people are nicer, things are cheaper, and it feels more "European". Day 5: Woke up, went into town and took a walking tour of Brussels, courtesy of my parent's 1965 "Walking tours of European Cities" book. It was great, although many streets and "old ... read more

Europe » France September 9th 2006

Observations: 1. You should have gone to the bathroom before we left France!!! 2. The French countryside is amazing! 3. Did you know that there are three Chimay beers? Me neither, but it gave me the excuse to try all three of them. Delicious (ps - go for the white label) 4. Being a jerk in traffic is not an American made product. In fact, I'm guessing they export it from Brussels in pretty large barges. Christina and I got caught in a huge traffic jam on the way into Brussels and everybody played the I'm More Important Than You game. This forced us to wait 60 minutes to go one kilometer. Day 4: Left Paris for Versailles. Versailles was huge. Now I can understand why the French stormed that place and cut off Marie Antoinette's ... read more
