Our plan for the day was an excursion to Kuranda, and everyone was happy that we didn’t need to hit the road until 9am. (Actually, some still found this a bit early). John and Sonia were up early enough to head to the beach boardwalk in search of a take-out breakfast which was well-received back at the hotel by Lauren and Andrew. A short drive brought us to Freshwater Station, where we boarded vintage train cars for the rail journey to Kuranda. The steep and winding train route through the hills and through river gorges was built over a hundred years ago and is still considered an impressive feat of engineering. Today it’s a tourist attraction, but the two-hour (very slow moving) train journey gave some great views as we wound our way through many twists ... read more

We were up early to check out of the hotel for a travel day. Given our struggles navigating Sydney the previous night we wanted to leave plenty of time for the drive to the airport, but as it turned out everything went perfectly and we got to the airport with plenty of time to spare. The three-hour flight to Cairns was uneventful and we were pleased to be greeted by sunny skies and much warmer weather. We found the streets of Cairns to be eerily quiet as we stopped in search of lunch. After a brief search we settled on a Raman noodle place, ordering three different dishes that were all ultimately indistinguishable. We pushed on (only another block, as it turned out) to check into our hotel. Unlike our lovely two-bedroom suite in Sydney, here ... read more

The forecast for our final full day in Sydney had consistently promised rain but the morning broke clear and beautiful, providing Sonia with even better opportunities to photograph the sunrise over Sydney harbor. Our plan for the day was a trip to the Blue Mountains and began with a cab ride to the airport to rent a car. Driving on the left wasn’t quite as bad as John had feared, but navigating out of the airport onto the M5 highway was much more difficult than expected, and we were ready for a break almost as soon as we began. Taking a suggestion we had picked up from the Seattle-ites, we stopped early in the trip at Featherdale Wildlife Park, a zoo of Australian animals that featured opportunities for Kangaroo feeding and Koala petting. The rain did ... read more

Still not really on Sydney time, Sonia, John and Andrew were up early to take some photos of sunrise over the harbor on the viewing platform just upstairs from our room, and to check out the swimming pool. Although small, the indoor pool is very pretty, has a window so swimmers can enjoy the view, and has an aquarium-style window allowing observers to watch swimmers from below the water. Back in the apartment we collected Lauren and after a breakfast at Starbuck’s we headed out for our big adventure for the day. The Bridge Climb is an opportunity to climb along the arch of the Sydney Harbor Bridge to the peak (and back down). It took fully an hour to complete preparations, which consisted of donning jumpsuits, safety harnesses and attachments for all of our gear ... read more

We arrived in Sydney a little after 10am on Sunday morning after about 19 hours of travel including a few hour lay-over in Auckland. John was reasonably excited that the three hour flight from Auckland to Sydney was on a 787 dreamliner, although it really didn’t turn out to be that different than any other airplane. Navigating customs and immigration was reasonably easy despite a few missteps on our part. Confident that Australians were our mates and would be quite happy to have us visit, it hadn’t crossed our minds that they would want us to get travel visas. Fortunately, the staff of Air New Zealand in SFO caught this and were able to fix it on the spot before we left the US. Secondly, Sonia had shamelessly brought trail mix into the country, causing her ... read more

South America » Peru » Cusco » Cusco June 19th 2014

On our last morning in Peru, we slept in and took our time repacking suitcases for the trip home. After breakfast and checkout, we stored our luggage with the hotel and headed out on foot to visit Sacsayhuaman (for pronunciation imagine a drunk slurring the words “sexy woman”). As we walked out of the hotel it was clear there was something going on. The streets, which had previously been full of speeding cars (pedestrian crossings have been a bit like a video game, but with only one life) and many police directing traffic, were completely filled with pedestrians. As the narrow street opened up to the Plaza de Armas (main square), there were people in costumes and uniforms, and all manner of outlandish brightly colored and shiny decorations, mostly with religious overtones. We had unwittingly arrived ... read more

Despite rolling back our start time to a seemingly reasonable 8:30am, we were still rushed getting a quick breakfast and getting out the door. The tour bus appeared in front of the hotel, right on time, and took us up the seemingly endless series of steep switch-backs to Machu Picchu. The bus was outfitted with a display, visible to all of the passengers, showing the bus speed, which only reinforced Sonia’s concern that we were going too fast. The narrow dirt road, carved into the steep hillside, generally lacks guard rails and with the large number of tourists visiting the site, there were frequent encounters with buses descending the hill necessitating pulling to the very edge of the road. We made it safely to the top, acquired a pocked guide book and were on our way. ... read more

Although it wasn’t the most restful sleep, we were all quite pleased with it’s duration of ~10 hours. Following a hotel buffet breakfast we checked out of the hotel, leaving most of our luggage with them, heading out with only backpacks and feeling slightly giddy at traveling into the Andes with only what we were carrying on our backs. Our taxi was right on time for our drive to Ollantaytambo. The drive started with a seemingly nonsensical back and forth through Cusco that gave us an opportunity to see more of the city as we gradually climbed even higher to the ridge where the highway is. As we reached more remote and less touristy parts of the city, we started to feel we were getting more of a sense of how people actually live. There were ... read more

We had one final perk from the cruise line in that they had arranged a bus to the airport. We dozed in the seats but were woken by our cruise guide pointing out some spectacular views of the volcanoes, including the snow-capped Cotopaxi which comes as close to the classical cone shape as anything we’ve seen. It was still visible from the sidewalk outside the airport and Sonia stopped to snap a few photos before we checked in for our flight. We had a few light snacks at the airport, boarded a two hour flight to Lima, Peru and then transferred to a second, one-hour flight to Cusco. Cusco is at 11,200 feet above sea level, meaning that they actually must need to DE-pressurize the airplane as it lands (cabin pressure is usually somewhere around the ... read more

With a tedious travel day ahead of us, we finished packing up our gear and headed down for our last breakfast on board. A final zodiac ride returned us to the pier where we first saw the ship and we were bid farewell by a sea lion lounging on a wooden bench. Several people (including Lauren and John) attempted to pose for photos on the bench, but it was made quite clear that he was not interested in sharing. We later learned that one of the children who disembarked after us, a boy a bit older than Andrew, had gotten too close and gotten a bite taken out of him! Fortunately they were able to patch him up sufficiently that he could catch his flight. A short bus ride took us back to the airport where ... read more
