Fine political art! I love the story around the Peace Bell--bullets to a bell--good for them! And the woman and man marching side-by-side outside the historical museum was unexpected and wonderful--I dislike those historical monuments when it's just a bunch of generals. The unusual floral details on the mosque and the colored buildings were all lovely. Glad you made it through the wild traffic!
Could have done without the traffic! Like you I loved the concept of the bell, everywhere we seem to go here depicts the young and non military in their memorials ...recognition of the people, is always a good thing.
What history! How lovely that there are still 9c churches with incredible mosaic floors and beautiful brickwork--hard to find these ancient treasures in Western Europe! Quite thoughtful of the Muslims to just convert them to mosques rather than destroying them. The views, the woods--it all looks lovely, and so brilliant to base yourself in one place and go for shorter jaunts!
An absolute gem! Well worth a visit, we had looked at Skyope but our hostel owner in Ohrid said that things were less than calm there so I think we made the right decision and it was delightful. The base and short jaunts are proving to be a hit.....next overnight is to Kosovo!
King Zog The ups and downs of life of the powerful. What a fascinating life King Zog must have had Jo...the founder of the modern state of Albania and it's first and self-proclaimed king. What a guy!
Reaching for Heaven First thought was if in Ethiopia it would have been built on top of the rock and an ordeal to reach...but the Greeks are more practical aren't they?
Monasteries on Mountains Oh Meteora, one of my favorite places--so glad you visited! Amazing how those monasteries were built on such high rocks so long ago. Pretty amazing too those rock climbers scaling those sheer rocks. What a fine adventure!
Amazing Even when they explained how they were built with carving grooves into the rock face it's hard to imagine how it worked. Defiantly one of my top ten places to visit.....so far!
'We travel not to escape life, but for life not to escape us'
A truly multi-national mammoth that travels the world visiting places of interest, making new friends and causing mischief wherever he can. With my carer Jo (bless her!) I have scaled castle walls, walked in the footsteps of Roman Emperors and Maharajah's, climbed mountains, contemplated caverns, caves and canyons and attempted the Le Mans 24 hour race on a skateboard! Whether it be climbing a Minaret in Mostar, Paddling in the Arabian Sea, Scaling mountains in Kotor, Feeding chickens in France or Catching trains in India, not... full info
