India Dear Beth and John,
In 1944 our family flew from Guilin over the Himalayas to Calcautta and by train to Musouri in the mountains and to Bombay where we boarded a ship for the US. I was 12 years old. My memory is of filth, poverty and beggars. t sounds like not much has changed, but I'm sure there has been progress.
Looking forward to reading more. Love, Betty and Dick
Poverty in India Reading your blog really brought back memories of the extreme poverty in parts of India. Unfortunately, as you said, that is part of India and it can be difficult seeing the reality of how some people live. It's definitely an eye-opener.
Hi Dear Beth and John,
I continue to marvel at your adventerousness ( is that a word?) I and my family were in Bombay and Calcutta in 1944 when we fled China overland and flew over the Hump into India. I was 12.
Have a great time and Merry Christmas. Where will you be on Christmas Day? We will be with the Hvers in Hong Kong.
Love,Betty
the Hindu elephants Hi you two! Can't wait to hear how you do in India!
Re the elephants - Hindu temples usually specialize in one diety, I expect you will be seeing several different ones now - the elephant god is Ganesh(a) who governs prosperity, increase, benevolence. jai ganesha! (praise to Ganesh!)

My memories Hi Beth & John,
When I was in Sarawak, at Christmastime in 1957, a friend, Mark Reams, and I made a trip to Angkor Wat, and other Wats, I having come by car from Kapit, Sarawak, and he from Medan, Sumatra. One of the memories I have is when we arrived at the boarder between Thailand and Cambodia, our driver and the Cambodians showed a great deal of anger at each other, which we understood to be due to wars between those two countries/cultural groups. I don't know whether that has changed or not, but hope there some reconciliation might have been achieved! We look forward to your blog on your time in Thailand, and I hope you get upcountry, e.g., to Chiang Mai and the hill tribes there. We have a friend working in Chiang Mai, who is Karen Smith (about Kathy's age) if I get her email address I'll send it. - Uncle Rich
plastic trash bags I too am frustrated by how much we see this non-renewable resource littering the landscape. it made me very proud of my adopted country when they passed into law requiring the change to biodegradable (cornstarch-based) bags. I have received two so far from stores where I shopped before I left, and I was thrilled! The technology required for changing over the production is not that complicated, and the raw materials turn out to be cheaper. heeellllllooooo? its a good and simple solution - just not as lucrative for the oil industry.
Your tour in VN not completed if you did not see a psychic, hehehe..., and I forgot to take you to see one. Hope you have a good time in Phu Quoc Island and "drink" a lot of "nước mắm" (just kidding)
Wow! You did it! We used to live in Roxborough near the start of the Colorado Trail. We'd dream of making the trip one day but never did. You are our heros. Colorado Escapes

WOW Hi Beth and John,
So many wonderful things you are seeing (and so am I through your Blog)....I love the pictures and the narrative. I am not as adventurous as you two and fear I would not fare well if I were on your journey. Still, the photos and commentary are so rich and full of wonder I am so lucky to be able to follow your travels.
Beth we miss you at work, envy your adventures, and wish you and John safe travels and joy!!
Keep the blogs coming - it is great living vicariously through your adventure!!
Cheers,
