Tim & Vinny

I finally made it back to the states just in time for the holidays with the family. The holidays were great despite the cold weather and I wish you all a Happy New Year. Hopefully you enjoyed my first attempt at a blog. I will continue to update as I am able to travel. Enjoy!

The last leg of my holiday took me to Mexico and Belize. From Peru, I headed to Cancun for the transition from the Incan world to one of the Mayan ruins! After coming from Peru, Chile, and various other locations which can be called nothing short of third world, heading to Cancun and the ridiculously overpriced tourist world made me feel a bit out of place. I spent three days there in Cancun doing as little as possible while I relaxed from my trek and plotted the remainder of my journey. The toughest part was deciding how and when I would get to Belize, my final destination. Needless to say, I got out of Cancun as soon as I could and made my way to Chichen Itza, one of the new Seven Wonders of the World. ... read more

South America » Peru » Cusco » Lares Trek December 14th 2009

Sorry its been a while since my last entry here.....Following my adventures in Bolivia I continued my journey to Cusco, Peru and the gateway to Machu Picchu. Based on the recommendations of a number of travelers I met along my trip, I decided on the Lares Valley trek as opposed to the over trekked and mucho touristy route of the Incan Trail. When I made my plans, the agency told me a couple was supposed to join me, but when I returned for the meeting that evening, I found out is was just me. So the plans were in motion and I was just along for the ride. The Lares valley is more cultural than the Incan trail, where they move you through the path the Incans used long ago to get to Machu Picchu and ... read more

Following my time on Easter Island I ended up spending a day in Santiago walking around and seeing some of what it had to offer. I stayed near the city center in a small hotel. It was pretty nice for what I paid for it. While I was walking around during the day, with my camera taking photos of some of the churches, a number of people told me to watch myself with my camera. They all indicated there were bad people around who would try to take it. I didn´t have any problems, however I paid attention to what I was doing and who I was around before blasting out some photos. That next morning I flew to La Paz, Bolivia, which is the worlds highest capital city. It sits at 3660 meters (thats almost ... read more

Well, following my blistering trip through Asia, it was time to change continents and make my way to South America. I decided to make a connection in Europe to catch up with a few friends in Germany. Getting to Germany wasn´t too bad. Coming from India, I arrived in shorts, a t-shirt and flip flops. Well Lets just say it was about 27 degrees F. I was wondering why everyone was mean mugging me walking through the airport, but figured it was the shorts, I hope! I spent a week there and cannot tell you how much the hospitality meant to me. I couldn´t find a hotel after the first few days, as there was a huge conference in the area which booked all the rooms in every hotel I called or went to. A friend ... read more

In Agra, I decided to continue to a nice quaint area known as Rajistan and start in the city of Jaipur. I found out it is the beginning of the typical tourist route of Rajistan, which includes Jaipur, Pushkar, Udaipur and Jodhpur. I hit 3 of the four places....damn, I am a tourist! As I said, I started out in Jaipur which was and interesting ride from Agra. I got on the bus and we barreled down the 'highway' dodging everything I mentioned before.....animals, cars, bikes, most of which didn't have any lights.....I am so shocked we didn't hit anything looking back on it. As I said before....it seems they just make it work (I know their traffic habits would NEVER work in any part of the Western World, but somehow most of SE Asia makes ... read more

Following my time in Cambodia, I decided to hit up India to see the Taj Mahal and to see for myself the illusions created by Rudyard Kipling and journalists of the early 1900's. I arrived in Delhi and I was expecting the airport to be a total shithole, as noted by many travelers who have passed through it. It wasn't as bad as I anticipated, and I have certainly been in worse (Cairo, Nairobi, among others). Well I fought my way through customs and into the country only to run into a road block at getting a ride. There are abuot 100 people there asking if you need a ride and pulling you towards their cab and grabbing your bag to take it to their cab. I wasn't having any of this so I pushed my ... read more

Making it to Siem Reap from Phnom Penh was an interesting and uneventful bus ride. If you think barreling down a mostly paved road in a runaway bus dodging people, motorbikes, other buses and wild dogs is uneventful that is. I arrived at Siem Reap in order to see some of the ancient city of Angkor Wat and the surrounding temples. I chose to start with a day of exploring the smaller temples, nicknamed the Big Circle. I hate to admit I don't recall some of the names, but some included Ta Phom, Ban Teay Kdei, Sasong, Ta Som, Pare Rup and Pra Khan. They were simply amazing......some instances you literally have to climb through the doors and hallways as they are overgrown with trees, moss and other types of plantlife. Others allowed you to walk ... read more

I survived Thailand, Pattaya and the infamous Walking Street. Now I find myself in lovely Phnom Penh, Cambodia. I arrived a few days ago and have been seeing some of the local sights around the capital, which is filled with motorbikes, tuk tuks and a third world aura which should be experienced once in life. I say this to really allow people, mainly Westerners, to gain an understanding and an appreciation for what we have and what our countries stand for. It is really a sight to see. Upon arriving at the Phnom Penh international airport, I received my visa and was free to roam about the country for approximately 1 month. I opted to go to the hostel in a taxi, as I was not ready for another tuk tuk ride just yet. After fighting ... read more

I made it through Kathmandu and onto Bangkok, Thailand to meet a mate. I arrived a day before he did and checked into a hotel near the airport. I went to get a massage and have some grub before retiring to the room early for a movie and an easy evening of rest. I had an inkling as to what the next few days had in store for us so the rest was going to be much needed!!! The following morning I woke up early and headed to the airport....when I walked outside, it was raining like a sumbitch! I met him at the airport and we found our car for the two hour rain-soaked trip to Pattaya, all the while I was thinking it was good to have some company on my trip for a ... read more

Next chapter in the on-going saga of Vinny & Dog's Epic Trek I was going paragliding.......so here goes........The guy told me the rules and how to get off the groud.....he said it was easy, just run off the side of the cliff we were on. Sounds ok to me, what you think? No issues taking off or during the amazing 1 hour flight. As we were flying there were too many people around also paragliding. They were everywhere. You trun right and there was someone, you trun left and the same. I though we were going to have to dog fight our way through the sky? One part we went higher and higher into the clouds.....I felt the mist of the clouds on my legs and face.....I was in total awe......The flight was awesome.....then to the ... read more
