Hello again my blogging buddies.I am not one to lay low for too long so today I went off to visit a couple more of Bangkok's must see sights. The demonstrators are still out there at the 7 intersections in the city but on my walk about today I saw no evidence of the shut down of Bangkok other than a few people on the Skytrain presumably heading to the demonstrations. I headed to Chinatown today, taking the skytrain across the river then walking through the city. The streets were all busy and lots of coming and going.I travel with a good map and a small compass I received as a thoughtful and timely gift from Nicole.Street signs are somewhat of a challenge here but with natural boundaries like rivers you can only be lost for so long. ... read more

Well blogging buddies, just an update on my situation here in Bangkok.Yesterday was day one of 'Shut down Bangkok' and I can report things were quiet. There are demonstrators at a numher of intersections in town blocking roads so traffic miseries, beyond the usual ones abound, but here the day was quiet and spent in silent reflection by the lovely pool on the 7th floor.I received an update from the Canadian Embassy, telling me they had relocated consular services due to the blockade but were still monitoring.I also met Prapan, my landlord, last evening and we had a good chat about the situation and possibilities. I am heading out today to see some sights, ever vigilant as always, Prapan has circled the demonstration areas on my map so I will be able to stay clear. All is good here ... read more

Well my decision to leave the passion and danger of Latin America behind for the serenity of South East asia seems to have been a miscalculation.Oh well I love to have things to write about, though I expect what is going on here in Thailand and Bangkok in particular is being well documented out there in the world.I have no political opinion regarding the upcoming Shut Down Bangkok demonstrations scheduled to begin tomorrow morning and run, coincidentally and unfortunately until Feb 2, the day I am scheduled to leave! Anyway since I arrived a week ago I have been following the unfolding of this drama daily.Tomorrow is an unknown and quite fluid I think. There are a number of possibilities and I do not presume to be able to predict so I like you will wait and ... read more

Well blogging buddies I am back in the blogosphere from beautiful Thonburi.I have been trying unsuccessfully to figure out why my pictures will not post on the blog and I regret to report no success as of this writing. The first blog had photos you say, what is the problem.Well I do not know the answer but can tell you the first photos were taken and taken directly off my new Samsung tablet, the photos I am having difficulty with are photos I took with my camera and are stored on a micro SD card that goes into the tablet. It seems to find and read the files but does not produce images on the blog.Extremely disappointing as this is a beautiful place but as the title says it is time for a thousand words to paint the ... read more

Good day blogging buddies, I actually started this posting last night but hit an incorrect button somewhere and whoosh it was gone forever.I have a new tablet, a wonderful device and certainly easier to carry around the globe but I have dyslexic fingers.I titled this post jet lagged to highlight to you all just how screwed up the body can get when it is transported to a place the inverse of its normal rythm.Today is the first morning I have been up at a reasonable hour,05:30 and not 3am or 2pm! Normally I am a pretty sound sleeper, notwithstanding sleep apnea, but to find myself wide awake at 3am was harsh. When I finally got to sleep it was closer to 7am snd I slept till 1pm.I awoke to a warm apartment and a hot day outside,+32.As ... read more

Hello again blogging buddies. It is January after all and so time to cross another place off my list! This year I decided to get away from the winter snows of Ottawa but turned my sights to SE Asia and Bangkok in particular. As usual I have rented a lovely apartment in Thonburi, a neighbourhood of Bangkok. The trip across the globe is a long one indeed and not for those of you who can not sit for long periods of time in an aluminum tube at 40,000 feet! 5.5 hours to vancouver then 12.5 hours to Hong Kong then another 3 hours to Bangkok.Needless to say I was somewhat wilted when I arrived. Not much to say about Air Canada and their service but I did spend some extra money to get leg room which was great, the bad ... read more

Well my friends it is close to the end of this trip and I thought I would wrap it up with another blog about some of the other days and pictures I have had and taken in the last week or so.It is amazing the time has gone by so quickly, as everyone says I am sure.First let me tell you about the city concert. There was an arts festival here last weekend with bands playing in the parks and some exhibitions and childrens activities. One of the more interesting events was a concert last sunday night beginning at 9.This was the day Michael and I had been to the wine valley so when we got back to town and he picked up his wife and sister in law I was dropped off at my apt.I wanted to ... read more

South America » Chile » Valparaíso Region » Valparaíso February 1st 2013

Hello again from somewhat cloudy Valparaiso.I am told it has not been a great summer here on the coast, with more cloudy days than they are used to.Perhaps another sign of the warming of the planet and the movement of the ocean currents that effect these coast lines so much. I asked Micheal the Pirate to take me out to some vineyards and see some of the country side outside of Valparaiso.Michael suggested we wait a couple of days to see if he could round up a few more adventurers for our excursion but as the time went by no one came forward so off we went with just the two of us in Michaels father in laws car.Michael lives in an apartment building in Vina and has problems with wingnuts parking infront of his car ... read more

Hi again, the sun is shining but I am feeling guilty for not writing for a few days, so thought I would spend some time and a bottle of Chardonnay with you while I continue to write about some of my other days of the last week. I had not been on a formal or informal tour of Valpo since arriving many weeks ago.One of my usual routines in a place is to take a bus tour or some other orientation to get to know the place where I am staying.Since there are no bus tours I looked elsewhere and came across Michael the Pirate. Yes yes I know stay away from pirates, I have already been warned, but Michael came well recommended by by British ex neighbours in the apartment and is also mentioned in the ... read more
