We headed off towards Brisbane and so left New South Wales and entered Queensland - and it’s not sunny here either, what has happened to the sun in Australia! We travelled along the Gold Coast which then turned into the Sunshine Coast (really) stopping at Coolum Visitor Centre to collect some brochures and maps of the area. The sun was not shining and the rain was coming down in buckets so we continued on and on stopping at Peregain Beach where we had lunch in the van watching the rain on the windscreen. We had a quick walk along the beach between showers. The whole place was completely deserted apart from a couple of bored surf patrol guys watching the empty waves and so we continued on to Noosa Heads and Nooseville to try and find ... read more

We left Moonee Beach heading north towards the Clarence Coast and decided to detour off the Pacific Highway and travel along the scenic route. Well the roads soon became extremely narrow and started to deteriorate quite rapidly with huge pot holes, well one should really say 'huge craters' and we wondered if we should have stayed on the main roads. As I have mentioned before the roads in this area of Australia are not in the best state of repair and with the top heavy motorhome it was not an easy drive. One had to decide whether to avoid the holes and have all of ones belongings spinning around inside the van or drive off the side of the road on to the waterlogged bank and get 'bogged down'...... - luckily though there were not many ... read more

A warm welcome to our latest reader (number 50) - we have just been joined by our grandaughter, Maisie Anna Sheffield who has asked for a subscription to our blog - hope you enjoy our travels Maisie - and be good for mummy whilst you are in England for the summer. We left Port Stephens and headed north stopping at a Visitor Centre in Bulahdelah to pick up information on what to see in the area and decided to take the scenic drive called The Lakes Way to Seals Rocks through the Myall Lakes National Park. We were held up a little as there was a bad accident on the Pacific Highway and two huge lorries had toppled over and were in the process of being recovered. Therefore the small town of Bulahdelah was extremely busy ... read more

So here we are back in a motorhome and we both felt it was so familiar and soon settled back into the ‘van’ life again. We drove north heading for Port Stephens, stopping at a shopping mall to pick up supplies and into Tomaree National Park where we had booked a campsite right next to One Mile Beach. As we travelled along we noticed an abundance of Gymea Lilies, in amongst the trees, we had seen some planted along side the roads in Sydney and Gaye had one in her garden but it had never flowered (that’s how we knew what they were). Well they were certainly flowering here and looked amazing as some were as tall as the surrounding gum trees - this giant plant had many sword like leaves and the flower spike grows ... read more

Well we have arrived in Sydney, New South Wales again and we were expecting warmer weather but it was still quite cold with grey skies - very similar to Victoria. Although as we flew into the city the clouds cleared and we got a lovely view of the Opera House and Sydney Bridge which brought back memories of our time here last year. Len and Gaye greeted us at the airport - we had met them on a tour in the Outback, Western Australia last June and they were kindly putting us up for our few days in their home in Bankstown, Sydney before we headed north in a motorhome. We had spent quite a long time in Sydney last year, you may remember that we found it difficult to get out - as when we ... read more

We spent our last couple of weeks in Victoria touring around, mostly on day trips - the weather was getting colder and wetter - winter had arrived. We have not missed the cold on our travels and now here we were in Melbourne and they was experiencing the wettest and coldest May/June after 14 years with hardly any rain and severe drought conditions! Over the road from where we were housesitting a small stream had come up over the banks and was partly covering the pavement. It had risen so quickly after a day of rain you could actually see it rising. The football pitch and children’s playground were totally underwater. Our neighbours said ‘not to worry’ as it never gets any higher than the pavement - famous last words! The stream was actually part of ... read more

We started to settle into our ‘new home’ in Narre Warren, Melbourne very quickly and enjoyed staying in one place for a while. We explored the area either by walking or on Bronwyn’s and Alan’s bikes (preferred walking though), soon getting used to the area and not getting too lost on our ‘outings’. Those of you that know him well will appreciate the fact that Paul soon settled into watching ‘Australian TV’ again, although he continued to moan about ‘all’ the adverts. I said that if he turned it off then he would not have to listen to them, I will not repeat his reply! We met up with Ken and Judy from Melbourne who had been fellow guests on our disastrous Barrier Reef cruise last year and it was great to see them both again. ... read more

We left Sri Lanka and arrived in Singapore just over three hours later and what a shock to the system it was. How different can two islands be in this part of the world - Singapore was so modern, clean and new compared to Sri Lanka which was so old, chaotic and raw. We were staying at an airport hotel as we only had a few days but it was an ideal location for our short time on the island. After collecting our luggage we took the shuttle train to the next terminal and then just walked directly into the hotel lobby where we were greeted with a friendly welcome by the reception staff. The hotel room was immaculately clean and tidy compared to many we had stayed at in Sri Lanka but that being said, ... read more

Today we were going to have a tour of Sri Lankan ‘police stations’ before we continued our journey - yes really!!! We had to go back to the local police station at Hungama to collect a copy of our statement which we had given to the police the night before. On arrival we were greeted by the same Officer we had seen previously and after some ‘conversation’ between Jaywa and him they marched off with Paul to meet the Officer in Charge. Whilst I was waiting for Paul to return (hopefully he would not get locked in the cells) quite a few families were waiting to be seen by the Officer in Charge. A couple of young lads were sitting quietly with their father - not sure what they had been up to - they were ... read more

It was sad to leave Yala as we had so enjoyed our safaris into the National Parks even though the roads were extremely bumpy and bone jarring - the wildlife more than made up for all those aching muscles! The Chaaya Wild Hotel was excellent, well located with the beach and lagoon so close to our jungle chalet. In fact as we were checking out the the swimming pool area was a ‘playground’ for a group of monkeys enjoying the vista whilst no-one was around and a crocodile was sunning itself on the lagoon edge behind the pool. Several Painted Storks were foraging in the shallow water which was fascinating to watch. They immerse their half open beaks in the water and sweep them from side to side and snap up any small fish that are ... read more
