South America » Argentina » Buenos Aires » Buenos Aires January 6th 2013

Hard as it was, we rolled out early again today for our last day in this beautiful city. Carol’s main desire here was to visit the crypt of Evita, aka Eva Duarte Peron. Check out the crypt with the dog with the shiny nose. Legend has it if you rub the dog’s nose you will return to Buenos Aires. We’ll be back! We hit the streets and walked north to the Recoleta Cemetery which is in our area of the city, passing through embassy row and a lot of very nice apartments and homes in the local neighborhood. Housing prices here are outrageous, with the average cost for a “nice” two-bedroom, one bath (that means with a toilet and a shower or a bathtub in the same room) and a place to park your ride (if ... read more

We got a great night of sleep and were out and on the streets early today, as this is a BIG city and there is a LOT to see. While it is great to be back on land and walking again without a swaying gait, this place is SO hot and humid. Reminds us both a lot of San Antonio, Texas, which we both dislike for weather reasons. You walk about a half mile and your shirt is totally soaked through, and sweat is running down your arms and legs, and mixing with the sun block, which is just swell. The locals have it wired though. Stores open about 0930 – 1000 and then close again about 1200 for three hours, re-opening at 1500 until about 2000. Then everyone begins their “evening” about the time we ... read more

We had a pretty good idea this was not going to be one of those days that was well choreographed when we came down from our final visit to Jimmy to find that the ship was about one full hour behind schedule getting people off-loaded. It just got worse from there, and today marked a HUGE failure on the part of Princess Cruises to have their shit together! Imagine 6,000 people all getting off four cruise ships at the same time, with no direction from anyone, in a large warehouse that is about 90 degrees F inside, with 90% humidity (and, of course, NO AC), and porters just dumping bags helter-skelter into the middle of the warehouse, and letting people fend for themselves, and that is a pretty apt description of the morning and early afternoon ... read more

This -- After a 90-minute delay on the ship

Our last shore day and this cruise has come to an end all too soon. On your first day out of the embarkation port you feel you will be gone forever, but the time flies by so quickly. Tied up at the main Montevideo pier at 0800 and were off the ship in a flash (after hitting Jimmy). Big surprise last night…. As part of Steve’s “Ultimate behind the Scenes” ship tour yesterday, we returned to our room from an awesome guitar performance to find a REAL high-end fleece robe, a chef’s apron, and photos of the adventure. Steve keeps his photos; you can guess who gets the remainder of the stuff…. Now we need to figure out how to get all of this crap back home! We hit the beach early for our last tour ... read more

Our last full day at sea as this voyage comes to a close Friday. Today has been a quiet day for the most part, as we just rest up and take stock of getting off the ship and onto our next leg of the tour in Buenos Aires early Friday morning. We are experiencing very heavy seas and gale force winds again, so we were bundled up while reading on the sun deck as we are moving across a very deep portion of the Atlantic at present. As they are cross swells, the ship is rolling a tremendous amount, even with all of the stabilizers’ out. Thank God we have those or there would be a LOT of sea sick people on-board. The ship’s Dr. told us this morning that a very large number of people ... read more

South America » Argentina » Chubut » Puerto Madryn January 1st 2013

Hola and Happy New Year from the Southern Hemisphere! We are still in the UTC-3 time zone, so we even beat the East coast of the U.S. to 2013 by two hours. Docked in Puerto Madryn at 0700 this morning, but slept in and left the dock about 1000. Wow! What a beautiful little resort city, and better yet, most everything was closed for New Year’s today so it was nice and quiet. We just lazed along the beachfront all day, took some photos, had coffee and lay in the sun reading books, and snagged some cold stuff at the Farmacia. When we do the “ultimate bank robbery” this is where we will re-locate to spend our loot! Two interesting stories of note: Look at the photo of the sea lions sleeping on the baluster along ... read more

Oceans and Seas » Atlantic December 31st 2012

Things calmed down a bit during the night as we get closer to the mainland, and we have left the cold and wet weather behind as we move back toward the equator. We still have 15 – 20 foot seas, but very little wind. Although out next stop is in Puerto Madryn on the Argentinian coast, we heard a weather report that our following destination, Montevideo (Uruguay), was experiencing 95 degree F temps at 1000 this morning. We have decided Puerto Madryn will be an internet/catch-up day, as it is New Year’s Day here as well, and most places will be closed for the holiday. One note of interest from the Navigator’s log last night: The Star Princess has aboard a “NACOS Integrated Navigation Bridge System,” which utilizes three GPS systems that keep us within 2-3 ... read more

South America » Falkland Islands » East Falkland December 30th 2012

Actually we are in Stanley this morning, but one of our granddaughters, Allyson, is positive we are in Paradise Falls, South America, so there you are. We spent the last 24 hours steaming northeast of South Georgia and South Sandwich Island in “Whale Wars” country. Dropped the hook at 0730 and began the 2.5 mile tender ride into Stanley about 0830. This is an adventure because the Star Princess draws about 30’ of draft in a bay that is about 15 feet deep, so we are anchored outside in Port William Bay, and exposed to the elements a little more than usual, which provides for an interesting 30-minute ride in the small tenders. Conditions today are sloppy wet, thick mists, and gale-force winds. High chop in the bay and the visibility is about 1/3 of a ... read more

The entire ships’ company was up again by 0800 (no matter, as sunrise is now before 0430) as we approached Hornos Island, the whole purpose of our being on this cruise. Once one sees “The Horn,” why this name was given to this cape is obvious. We have had a chance to cross the equator at sea to become Shellbacks, and now we have sailed around the Horn. We are close to 9,000 miles south of our departure port of San Francisco, and what a stark and bleak place. The landscape is a mixture of flat, scrubby islands, mixed in with mountain ranges that look like twins to the Tetons in Jackson Hole. It is hard to imagine the European explorers of old coming this far from their homeland in ships the size of our lifeboats ... read more

The first bit of good news is that we are here at all, period….. So far, so good, regarding the Argentinians asking this British-registered ship to stay the Hell out of its waters. We have been asked in no uncertain terms by the Captain to refrain from wearing anything referring to the “Falkland Islands” while in this country. We are seriously in the southern latitudes now, as sunrise is at 0530 and sunset is close to 2330. Our tour guide told us yesterday about the “winter depression” suffered by people down here, just like up in the high northern latitudes. It has affected our sleeping patterns just in these few days, and it feels weird to be on the sun deck at 0900 with the sun almost directly overhead, but it neither actually rises in the ... read more
