Shashamane When Haile Selassie visited Jamaica, it rained for 40 days & 40 nights so the Rasafarians declared him a god. In appreciation he granted them land for an enclave in Ethiopia. One of Ethiopian history's great stories. Lucky are you to have been to this enclave...and the above photo your testament. Ethiopia's history is one of the jewel of Africa's highlights. Enjoy.
Goat racing, what a scream Raffle tickets, wine, desserts....it sounds like you had everything you needed. Loved hearing about your night in the tent outside the police station. The kindness of others.
Welcome back... We would have regretted missing this blog as it brought back wonderful memories of our safari in these parks in January 1984. Your Followers await the next installment with abated breath. The best place to end a long trip is home with family so enjoy until your next adventure!
Certainly glad you are blogging again. We are fans who have been waiting for more. Slip, slop, slap, love the elephants. There is nothing better than seeing animals in their natural habitat. We'd love to see the lions watching us. Sounds like a fantastic adventure. Please keep blogging.
Hi there! Sorry it's taken so long to reply to your question. I travelled with African Trails and highly recommend them. I've booked a second trip with them and will be heading off for four months next year. Can't wait!
Fantastic! I love reading about your gorilla trek adventures. I've wanted to do this for years and now you've rekindled the desire! Which did you prefer for the trek, Uganda or Rwanda? How would one even begin coordinating something like this?
Fabulous blog! I trekked the gorillas back in 2008 and it is definitely one of the top ten travel experiences ever. Sounds and looks like it left the same impression on you. Sorry to hear about the theft of your Blackberry (and possibly other items) on Christmas Eve - hope everything is okay.
Thanks Shane... The phone is the least of my worries but I'll miss all my notes. Having been in Cairo less than 12 hours after an overnight bus from Dahab, I still had my passport in my bag, as well as one other person's. The embassy is closed until after new year's which is unbelievably frustrating but...the joys of travel.
I hope you enjoyed the festive season and all the best for 2013!
Great blog and pictures... you must have taken good notes to remember all this detail three months later...or most probably it was an experience you couldn't forget.
Not so much a great memory... ... as keeping notes in my Blackberry! Then I would email them to myself and when I had internet, upload the notes.
This has all come to an abrupt end however as I was robbed on Christmas eve and have now lost the phone and my notes from Ethiopia, Sudan and the few days in Egypt. I will post photos with a few paragraphs beneath instead.
Unbelieveable. This trip looks amazing. Its definitely something I hope to do someday. Thanks so much for sharing this experience and recommending Rwanda.
What a trip! Thanks for all your effort in writing the blogs and psoting the pictures. I look forward to your blogs about Tunesia and then South America.
very sorry Sorry to hear that and we camair pple suffer from that too. Hope things change quickly so youths can get jobs and stop bad act. But hope u had a great experince to remember cos we are very nice pple.
Devastating news We are so sorry for you loss of all those photos and personal items. I'm glad you were insured but as you say some things are not replaceable. Hope your knees are better. Massage is the cure for all.
photos--so sorry! So sorry you lost your computer with all your photos--it's a cautionary tale for all of us long-time travelers to back them up (I've only done this once in two years--bad form). However, I'm glad you're with a group and on to new adventures. Maybe you can use some of your friends' photos. Your adventure sounds great!
Welcome back to blogging... and that you have worked out the picture thing! Just remember that you need to post 5 pictures to show up on the Front Page...realizing that with your broadband connections, it probably takes five minutes for each picture so isn't worth the wait for you, but is for us.
Good to be back! Thanks for the feedback as always, Bob. Yes, internet isn't the fastest, especially when all 15 of us are frantically trying to Skype, upload to FB and blogs and check bank balances!
Having grown up in Australia, I had no idea that when I left in December, 1998, I wouldn't go back. After working and travelling in the northern hemisphere for over 13 years, I then quit everything to travel through Africa in 2012. Since then I have also travelled the Silk Route and in 2015 moved to Bangkok, Thailand.
The more I travel, the longer the lists of places to go grows, not shrinks.
Thanks to all those who read and wrote. it's the first time I've attempted blogging and feedback was definitely the motivation to keep me going!
