We have just held our orientation for our new students and families at Shoal Point Beach. It was another perfect day in Queensland. Last weekend was the post arrival camp at Rowallan Park, again perfect Spring weather, great fun, good kids. They are not too fussed about the snakes, frogs and spiders but good food, good company and fun seems to even it out a bit.... read more

I have just traveled out west for my work and could not resist taking some pictures along the way. This year there has been quite a bit of rain in some parts of the country and this has allowed the wild flowers to bloom in some spots for the first time in 8 years, These flowers are all by the side of the road in a 20 kilometre stretch between Jericho and Barcaldine. These towns are in Central Queensland about 700 kilometres inland from Rockhampton. They make such a contrast to the red earth, gum trees and sparse shrubbery that you usually see out there ... read more

Pioneer State High School 's bands have just come back from a very successful week's tour of Brisbane. The symphonic band, stage band and HOD of arts Renee Covey as well as instrumental teacher Paul Johnstone and myself and the 29 kids were going to have a busy week. Monday morning at 5-30am, loading instruments onto a bus, saying goodbyes and finding a comfy seat for the 14 hours bus ride from Mackay to Brisbane were the events of the day. Arriving in Brisbane at 8 mile plain caravan park around 8-00pm in time for tea, unpack and lights out for a big day ahead. Tuesday we had our first go at unloading the bus in an awkward spot, carrying heaps of heavy band gear big distances and then trying to set it up in record ... read more

We had a great two days taking the ferry from Picton to Wellington, spending a night and then returning the next day. Leaving Nelson at 6-30am was not that great considering it was dark, cold and raining and i had to drive up and over a mountain range but... Arrived safe and sound in Picton which is the little town just north of Blenheim from which the Interislander Ferries cross between the south and the north islands of New Zealand. Picton is a very neat and tidy town with a great little water front area and a small marina and a huge deep water port for the large ferries. There are four to five crossings each day, each way, which can all be booked and paid for over the net, just choose the time you ... read more

It’s been a while since I have been in New Zealand in the winter and you forget all those little things about life in a winter climate. Since I live in North Queensland and it’s almost always tropical, life is quite different to New Zealand. It’s such a surprise waking up and looking out your window and having to rub the condensation off the glass before you can see. Great fun to draw pictures in though and I remember getting into trouble for this when I was little. Always remember to park the car with the windshield protected as de-icing the car before you can drive off is such a chore. You have to remember to look at the weather forecast to plan your days rather than just expecting it to be fine each day. ... read more

Every year for the past 16 years, Townsville has held its annual folk festival on the Queens birthday long weekend. It is held 40 kms south of Townsville at Mountain View Lake Eco Park which is a small caravan park beside some beautiful hills and a lovely lagoon. You can camp in unpowered sites, but need to bring all your own camping gear, shower and toilet facililites are situated in the main festival area, with showers of the very cold variety and basic toilets provided. There were some great food stalls, including the Hare Krishnas, Taste of Thailand, Ice creams, Coffee, Chai Tea and Biscuits, Hamburgers, Juices and more coffee. There were the usual market stalls of clothing and associated jewellery, and bits and pieces. The festival starts on Friday night and goes until Monday ... read more

Birdsville is most famous for its once a year Birdsville Races held on the first weekend of September. The normally small town of 120 swells to 5000, as people fly, bus, drive and ride in for two days of races. The airfield opposite the pub fills with up to 200 planes and people camp out under the wings, and all descend on the pub for food and drink. The pub was first built in 1884, and despite fires and floods its original walls still remain. The first hotel, The Royal, is also still standing albeit a shell of its former past Another attraction is Birdsville's proximity to The Simpson Desert and Big Red, which is a huge sandhill attracting four wheel drive maniacs keen to try out their skills. It is the first and highest ... read more

Our journey in our government issued 2 wheel drive 4 cylinder car started in Mackay on the coast of Qld on Sunday morning at 5-30am. After a quick stop at Nebo for breakfast and a hilarious look at the police breath testing the campers from the night before rodeo, we were off on our outback trip. Our lunch stop was at the Gemfields 450km inland from Mackay. 50kms west of Emerald lie the towns of Anakie, Sapphire and Rubyvale. These towns are home to the many people who are trying to make their living from digging in the surrounding dirt piles to find precious gems such as sapphires. Life is pretty rough and ready with many living in lean toos, caravans, and make shift shacks. Dirt is dug from the surrounds, washed and sifted and ... read more
